Anatomy of the Clitoris

Abstract: Typical textbook descriptions of the clitoris lack detail and include inaccuracies. It is impossible to convey clitoral anatomy in a single diagram showing only 1 plane, as is typically provided in textbooks, which reveal it as a flat structure. MRI provides a multiplanar representation of clitoral anatomy in the live state, which is a major advantage, and complements dissection materials. The work of Kobelt in the early 19th century provides a most comprehensive and accurate description of clitoral anatomy, a… Show more

“…In many species, the clitoris contains erectile bodies that engorge during copulation (Crichton & Krutzsch, 1987; Drea & Weil, 2008; O'Connell et al, 2005). “…MRI and cadaver dissections have suggested the clitoris to be 9-10 cm in length, with a wishbone configuration and close proximity to the anterior vaginal wall. 24,25 Orgasms may arise from direct and indirect clitoral stimulation. 26 Coincident changes in innervation or blood supply of the clitoris could result in alterations in sexual function following surgical treatment.…”

“…Es preciso recordar que en el marco de las leyes actuales el consentimiento es necesario y suficiente para la realización de cualquier modificación del cuerpo femenino, excepto las que se realicen por razones rituales the orgasmic focus, that is clitoral vs. vaginal" (O'Connell et al 2005(O'Connell et al : 1194. Efectivamente, como afirma Thomas Laqueur, "The tale of the clitoris is a parable of culture, of how the body is forged into a shape valuable to civilization despite and not because of itself" (Laqueur 1990: 236).…”
