Anatomy, micromorphology, and histochemistry of leaves and stems of Cantinoa althaeifolia (Lamiaceae)

Abstract: This article enumerates the detailed anatomy of Cantinoa althaeifolia (Lamiaceae) illustrated with light and scanning electron microscopy images. The anatomical markers include the presence of branched nonglandular trichomes and capitate, peltate, and clavate types of glandular trichomes; prismatic crystals on the leaf and stem surfaces; and oil droplets in the leaf mesophyll. Histochemical tests and EDS analyses were performed in order to detect the composition of certain cells and their contents. The key fin… Show more

“…The presence of crystals in plants is common and may be formed in any organ or tissue. They usually occur in the stems (Brustulim et al, 2020) and leaves (Klider et al, 2020) and can be deposited in different tissues and locations, such as within epidermal cells (Traesel et al, 2017), externally to the epidermis (Almeida et al, 2020), in the mesophyll (Tirloni et al, 2018), and in the cortex and pith (D'Almeida et al, 2021) of the stem. They present a great variety of morphologies, such as prisms of different shapes, druses, styloid, and crystal sand, and are useful in the species identification.…”

“…Based on the chemical composition through EDS, the crystals present in the studied species are confirmed to be made up of calcium oxalate. EDS has been performed in order to confirm the chemical composition of crystals in several plant species (Tolouei et al, 2019; Almeida et al, 2020; D'Almeida et al, 2021). The calcium oxalate crystals are related to the defense of the plant by preventing the attack of herbivores.…”

“…The prepared slides were dried on a hot plate at 30 ̊C. The characteristics of petiole were studied under Light Microscope including petiole shapes, number and shape of vascular bundles, number of vessels, layers of collenchyma, and sclerenchyma (de Almeida et al., ). For observation of petiole anatomical characters, Meji (MT 4300H) Light Microscope was used.…”
