Anatomical Variations of the Frontal and Supraorbital Transcranial Passages

Abstract: In this study, 500 frontal and supraorbital transcranial passages were studied in 50 cadavers and 200 crania of 500 samples. One hundred six specimens had a frontal foramen (notch), and all the samples had a supraorbital foramen (notch). The frontal passage was a foramen in 7 samples and a notch in 99 samples. As for the supraorbital passage, it was found as a foramen in 133 of specimens and as a notch in 358 of specimens. In 9 of the specimens, there were double notches or foramina. The distances from the for… Show more

“…Webster et al in 1986 reported the distribution of 49.07% of bilateral supraorbital notches, 25.93% of bilateral supraorbital foramen and 25% of notch on one side and foramen on contralateral side [8] . Keskil [6,11,12]. But in the present study accessory supraorbital foramen was found in 15 sides (11.5%), which is more than previous studies.…”

“…But in the present study accessory supraorbital foramen was found in 15 sides (11.5%), which is more than previous studies. Saylam et al 2003 stated that the frequency of absence of SOF/N was in 5.5% on right and 10% on left side of skull [12]. Beer et al 1998 showed 3% absence in European skull [13].…”

“…The occurrence of supraorbital notch (64.81%) was more frequent than foramina (35.19%), a result that reinforces the observations of (Apinhasmit et al;Chung et al;Ongeti et al;Gümüsburun et al, 2002;Saylam et al, 2003;TurhanHaktanir et al, 2008). The frequency of the occurrence of supraorbital notch varied (45.9%-72.9%) among different populations.…”

“…In the literature, although there were studies on anatomical structure of this area using dry skull (Webster et al, 1986;Gümüsburun et al, 2002), cadaver (Miller et al, 2000;Janis et al, 2008, Jeong et al, 2010Fallucco et al;Konofaos et al, 2013), skull and cadaver (Saylam et al, 2003) and clinical (Filipovic et al) models, as suggested by Bjelakovic et al, we also thought that the most correct discussion method should be performed using a similar subject and methodology and therefore, we discussed our study results on previous studies that used CT scans and living samples for assessment.…”
