“…This study assessed the prevalence of sarcopenia defined by the AWGS 2019 criteria and yielded comparable findings with previous studies in the context of proportions of the populations which fulfilled the predefined criteria for sarcopenia. 40 , 41 A cross-sectional investigation by Mo et al 40 showed a similar prevalence of sarcopenia, described by the AWGS 2019 criteria, in 21% of 1050 community-dwelling older people in Changsha City, China. Population characteristics and geographical location may potentially influence the prevalence of sarcopenia, even with the standardization of definitions using the AWGS criteria.…”

“…Common risk factors for sarcopenia include third age [ 8 , 9 ], low levels of physical activity, malnutrition [ 5 ], body mass index [ 9 ], and several co-morbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory diseases [ 10 ], human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) [ 11 ], and cancer [ 12 ]. Moreover, multiple pathogenesis mechanisms such as endocrine dysfunction, growth factors, neuromuscular junction, muscle protein changes, and inflammatory conditions increase the complexity of sarcopenia [ 13 ].…”

“…Sarcopenia is an involuntary resorption of skeletal muscle with decreased muscle strength and function (Sun et al, 2021 ), which has recently been considered as a new complication in diabetic patients (Cruz‐Jentoft et al, 2019 ; Sluijs et al, 2015 ; Yasemin et al, 2019 ). The pathogenesis of sarcopenia is complicated and associated with aging, sedentary lifestyle, nutritional factors, increased production of reactive oxygen species, increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines, hormonal changes, and decreased neuromuscular function (Chen et al, 2020 ; Tan et al, 2021 ; Trierweiler et al, 2018 ). Age‐related causes of sarcopenia are related with chronic inflammation due to oxidative stress and proinflammatory cytokines (Lima et al, 2019 ).…”
