Introduction: The literature suggests that some risk factors for urinary incontinence can be modified by a healthy lifestyle; however, little is known about the factors associated with urge urinary incontinence (UUI), whose prevalence increases with age. Objective: To examine the modifiable risk factors of UUI in older women. Method: The sample consisted of 200 elderly (60 years or older) with a mean age of 69.06 ± 6.26 years. We identified the presence of UUI and behavioral risk factors (consumption of coffee, alcohol consumption, smoking and presence of constipation). Was also applied to the Domain 4 for International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to identify the level of physical activity and measured body mass index and waist circumference. The data were processed using descriptive and inferential statistics with a significance level of 5%. Results: The prevalence of UUI in the sample was 15,5%. Among the modifiable factors, only the level of physical activity was associated with the occurrence of UUI, and the physical exercise appeared as a protective factor among very active women (OR = 0.288) and less active (OR = 0.356). Conclusion: The symptoms of urgency can be softened by regular physical exercise. Through a healthy lifestyle can minimize a number of modifiable factors in the genesis of urge urinary incontinence.

RESUMOA incontinência urinária é defi nida pela International Continence Society como uma queixa de qualquer perda involuntária de urina. Este estudo objetivou estimar a prevalência de incontinência urinária; identifi car os fatores de risco associados à sua ocorrência, bem como traçar os perfi s sociodemográfi co e clínico de mulheres atendidas no Ambulatório de Ginecologia de uma Unidade Básica de Saúde de Teresina, no Piauí. Foi um estudo exploratório-descritivo, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa. Participaram da investigação 306 mulheres entre 20 e 83 anos. Utilizou-se como instrumento de investigação um formulário estruturado composto por dados sociodemográfi cos e clínicos. Uma análise estatística descritiva foi realizada a partir da distribuição de frequência e dos percentuais das variáveis, empregando-se as medidas de tendência central e dispersão e o teste do χ 2 com nível de signifi cância de 5% para verifi car as possíveis associações entre os quesitos estabelecidos nos objetivos específi cos da pesquisa. A prevalência de incontinência urinária foi de 40,8%. A maioria dos participantes apresentou incontinência urinária de estresse (60,0%), seguida da urgeincontinência (28,2%) e da incontinência urinária mista (12,1%). Houve predominância de mulheres de cor parda (64,8%), com afecções neurológicas (72,2%), das diabéticas (63,6%) e hipertensas (58,1%), daquelas submetidas às cirurgias pélvicas e abdominais (66,7%), das obesas (52,2%) e das tabagistas (72,2%). O estudo possibilitou conhecer a situação da incontinência urinária em mulheres assistidas na Atenção Básica, evidenciando resultados semelhantes aos existentes na literatura, contribuindo com informações relevantes e originais sobre a incontinência urinária, podendo despertar nos profi ssionais e gestores de saúde pública a necessidade de maior atenção para essa clientela, no sentido de prevenção e melhoria da qualidade de vida.DESCRITORES: Incontinência urinária. Objective: To compare the use of polypropylene mesh (PM) and the traditional anterior vaginal wall colporraphy in women with anterior vaginal wall prolapse (AVWP) using objective and subjective tests and evaluation of quality of life (QoL). Materials and Methods: One hundred women were randomly distributed in two preoperatory groups. The first group (mesh) (n = 45) received a PM implant and the control group (n = 55) was submitted to traditional colporraphy. Postoperatory follow-up was done after 12 months. The primary objective was the correction of the Ba point ≤ -2 POP-Q (Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification System) and the secondary objective was the improvement of vaginal symptoms and QoL through ICIQ-VS (International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire -Vaginal Symptoms). Complications related to the use of PM or not were also described.Results: There was a significant difference between all POP-Q measures of pre-and postoperatory periods of each group in particular. There was a significant difference of the Ba point of the postoperatory period between the Mesh and Control group. The mean of Ba point in the Mesh group was statistically lower than of the Control group, depicting the better anatomical result of the first group. Both techniques improved vaginal symptoms and QoL. The most frequent complication of the Mesh group was prepubic hematoma in the perioperative period. In 9.3% of the cases treated with mesh it was observed PM exposition at the anterior vaginal wall after 12 months, being most of them treated clinically. Conclusion: The treatment of AVWP significantly improved the Ba point in the Mesh group in comparison to the Control group. There were no differences of the vaginal symptoms and QoL between the two groups after 12 months. There were few and low grade complications on both groups.
