Analysis of the Performance of MMC Under Fault Conditions in HVDC-Based Offshore Wind Farms

Abstract: Abstract-This work analyzes the behavior of an MMC-HVDC-connected off-shore wind power plant (WPP) during dc faults. For that purpose, detailed models of the dc cable, MMC stations and transformers have been used in order to obtain reliable results. The influence of the WPP control method in the short-circuit behavior of the HVDC link has also been studied. Results show that the dynamics of the WPP contribution to pole-to-ground faults are slightly slower than those of the wind turbines current control loops. … Show more

“…Despite the high frequency of the final waveform, the switching frequency of each module can be low, resulting in reduced switching losses, since the number of switching devices is large and each of them does not have to operate frequently. In general, MMC systems present easy scalability, leading to high power ratings, and high modularity, allowing more flexible and economical solutions for the transmission systems [2,4,9,10,38,43,44].…”

“…There also exists a common DC-link in the MMC topology which is unavailable in CHB topology [6]. Based on this consideration, MMCs can be utilized as AC/DC interlinking converters in medium-and high-voltage renewable energy generation systems, e.g., offshore wind farm generation systems [7] and microgrids [8], as shown in Figure 1.…”
