“…For the past few years, many papers have been published showing the participation of various markers and distinct pathways in the progression of TMJ ID using TMJ discs and synovial fluid (Kubota et al, 1998, De Alcantara Camejo et al, 2014, Loreto et al, 2013, Wake et al, 2013, Kim et al, 2012, Leonardi et al, 2010a, Vernal et al, 2008, Sato et al, 2003. Sato et al, in 2003, performed a study using also an immuno-histochemical technique for the examination of synovial tissue from 46 temporomandibular joints with internal derangement in 44 patients.…”

“…Cytokines have emerged as the master controllers of hard tissue degradation in human joint tissue in both osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis models (Nishimura et al, 2002, Fu et al, 1995. Kim et al (2012), using TMJ synovial fluid, demonstrated a higher expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in patients with temporomandibular dysfunction.…”

“…This study, for the first time, focused on creating a tissueengineered SM of the TMJ with an original method, because we hold that an SM with abnormal function will cause continuous damage to the cartilage and disc rather than nourish them. For example, internal derangement of the TMJ is often accompanied by synovitis, during which cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor [Sato et al, 2005;Kumagai et al, 2010], interleukins [Suzuki et al, 1999;Sato et al, 2003;Vernal et al, 2008], tumor necrosis factor-α [Kaneyama et al, 2002;Vernal et al, 2008;Kim et al, 2012] and matrix metalloproteinases [Kubota et al, 1997;Tanaka et al, 2001] are highly expressed in synovial fluid or the SM. These cytokines are responsible for promoting vascular formation, causing pain and degrading the cartilage [Bonnet and Walsh, 2005], resulting in a poor clinical outcome.…”

“…TMJ osteoarthrosis (OA) which leads to TMJ pain and dysfunction is characterized by hard tissue destruction and degenerative changes. Internal derangement of the TMJ and OA are closely related entities (Emshoff et al, 2000;Kim et al, 2012aKim et al, , 2012b.…”
