Analysis of the application and impact of carbon dioxide media on the corrosion state of oil and gas facilities

Abstract: Products of several currently operated production facilities (Bovanenkovskoye, Urengoyskoye oil and gas condensate fields, etc.) contain an increased amount of corrosive CO2. Effect of CO2 on the corrosion of steel infrastructure facilities is determined by the conditions of its use. Carbon dioxide has a potentially wide range of applications at oil and gas facilities for solving technological problems (during production, transportation, storage, etc.). Each of the aggregate states of CO2 (gas, liquid and supe… Show more

“…Extraction of elemental sulfur is of crucial importance, since H 2 S is hazardous to the environment, extremely flammable and can dissolve in petroleum products, degrading their quality [34,35]. The Claus process involves the partial combustion of H 2 S using air or O 2 under enriched conditions to form elemental sulfur [36,37].…”

“…Corrosion requires three main pillars together and at the same time to initiate and grow: corrosive components (CO 2 , H 2 S, Cl-, etc. ), electron-consuming components (components for consuming corrosion electrons) (depolarizing components at the cathodic areas), electron-conducting components (components for electronic conduction from corroded (anodic) areas to cathodic areas that consume these electrons by depolarizers) [6,7]. The absence of either of them leads directly to slowing down the corrosion process and even stopping it completely.…”
