Analysis of General Composition and Harmful Material of Protaetia brevitarsis

Abstract: To evaluate Protaetia brevitarsis as a food material, we investigated its composition of nutritional and harmful components. Analysis of nutritional composition (moisture, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, crude fiber, and carbohydrates) showed that the content of crude protein, fat, fiber, and ash were 57.86±0.01%, 16.57±1.81%, 5.31±0.10%, and 8.36±0.10% in Protaetia brevitarsis powder, respectively. Amino acids were composed of 17.68% essential and 33.97% non-essential in Protaetia brevitarsis powder. Pro… Show more

“…Insects are a highly nutritious and healthy food source rich in unsaturated fatty acid, proteins, vitamins, fiber, and minerals (Huis et al 2013;Yoo et al 2013;Chung et al 2013a), suggesting that insects can be used as health supplements or functional foods (Ahn et al 2000(Ahn et al , 2002Nam & Ma 2000;Park 2001). “…Res. 5(11), 296-299 297 useful amino acid for improving cognitive ability and memory maintains the most amount (Chung et al, 2013;Noh et al, 2015). As crude fat is 16.1~18.5%, ratio of the unsaturated fatty acid is 75.5~76.4%, which oleic acid (C18:1) accounts for more than 60% among them (Chung et al, 2013;Yeo et al, 2013;Noh et al, 2015).…”

“…Among amino acids, the total content of essential amino acids such as methi onine, threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, phenylalanine, histidine and lysine had been reported as 178.5~206.7 mg/100 g (Chung et al, 2013;Noh et al, 2015). In particular, histidine contains the most abundance, which classify as an essential amino acid in the early childhood due to alleviating allergic symptoms and helping blood production.…”

“…Some of these cases involved insects that are used as traditional medicines with proven efficacy (Chung et al 2013a;Chung et al 2013b;Kwon et al 2013). The distribution and sales of certain edible insects have accelerated the industrialization of insects; however, the mass breeding of insects has also caused an increase in diseases (Kwak et al 2014;Lee et al 2015).…”
