Objective: The objective of the research was to identify and measure the value of existence, thus to analyze Willingness To Pay of farmer to keep the existence of Ongole Crossbreeds.Methods: The research was conducted in the Independent Taruna Group, Ngemplak District, Sleman Regency with the consideration that it is a PO cattle group that has the largest number of members in Sleman Regency. Determination of respondents by census as many as 40 farmers. Data was collected through interviews using a questionnaire as a research instrument. The identification of the existence of the business includes the availability of inputs, the development of outputs and the accessibility of supporting PO cattle using a Likert scale. Testing the consistency of statement items is tested for validity and reliability. The Contingent Valuation method is used to estimate the Willingness to Pay of farmers in maintaining their business.Results: The value of business sustainability from the existence of input (0.896), output (0.985), and support (0.885) is in the high category. The largest WTP value is the purchase of young female cattle with an average value of IDR 14.500.000/head, followed by waste treatment of IDR. 11,509,000/year and parent insurance of IDR. 40,000/head/year. The aggregate value of the group's WTP is IDR. 1,350,000,000/year.Conclusions: Livestock groups can maintain the existence of PO cattle because of the support of business existence, utilization of dung waste to increase income, and Willingness To Pay farmers. On the other hand, government support to provide subsidies and Siwab or its extension Mandatory cattle breeding is maintained to maintain the presence of PO cattle

Indonesian local beef cattle, Peranakan Ongole (PO), is essential cattle breed predominantly raised by smallholder farmers in Central Java Province. Although it is generally perceived that raising PO cattle is not a regular source of income for the majority of farmers, however, there are few specific studies investigating the aspects and motives of farmers to keep their cattle. Therefore, this study is designed to explore the perspective of farmers leaders in Central Java, Indonesia, toward the priority aspects of raising PO cattle for their livelihoods. We selected Blora, Klaten, Grobogan, and Rembang as representatives of the study involving 29 farmers leaders with at least ten years of experience. Analytic Hierarchy Process was employed as a decision-making instrument to understand better various aspects used by PO cattle farmers. The results show that farmers consider investment function as their primary goal in raising PO cattle in all study areas. Then, farmers consider reproduction performance as the top priority aspect. In conclusion, the study revealed that smallholder farmers consider reproductive ability as a priority due to farmers make the investment function the main goal in raising PO cattle. Therefore, we recommended that farmers improve their knowledge regarding cows' reproduction through extension workers' assistance. Certainty on the PO cattle's selling price is needed so that raising PO cattle is feasible as an investment and stimulates the interest of farmers raising PO cattle.

Cross-breeding between Peranakan Ongole (PO) and exotic breed are increasingly by smallholder farmer to obtain productivity improvement. Uncontrolled cross-breeding can be a threat to the existence of PO as local cattle in Indonesia. This study aims to identify the reasons behind cross-breeding breed preference among beef cattle farmers in Central Java. Primary data were obtained by interviewing a total of 121 smallholder farmers as respondents who were randomly selected. Blora, Grobogan, Klaten, and Rembang Districts have been chosen due to their high beef cattle farmer households population. Descriptive analysis by using cross-tabulation was performed to analyze the data. The results showed that 60.66% of farmers who raise PO cows would prefer Limousin semen to other semen due to the extension worker recommendation and the availability of frozen semen. Meanwhile, 22.95% of farmers prefer PO semen for their PO cows because of extension workers' recommendation and their intention to improve the calf productivity. It may indicate that the role of extension workers is prominent in the breed preference of cattle farmers.
