The COVID-19 breakdown affects many countries, people, and aspects, including Indonesia and its trade sector. One of the aspects affected is the traders in traditional markets. Traders in traditional markets also get the impacts of the decline in sales turnover. Traders in traditional markets in Medan also felt the impact. This research aims to describe the variety and function of the speech acts of traders' to the questions designed by researchers and consumers as speech partners regarding their sales and purchasing power during the COVID-19 pandemic in traditional markets in Medan using a pragmatic approach. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method by using participant observation technique and recording the ongoing trading interactions. The data in this study are the traders’ speech acts based on the designed questionnaire which is analyzed with Austin and Leech's (1969) speech act theory. The obtained results are 3 forms of speech acts, namely assertive, expressive, and declarative. The result finds that the dominant speech act in this study is assertive speech act. However, this study did not find commissive speech acts which caused by the responses or utterances given by the traders do not show the feature of the speech acts.

In this study focused on to describing the types and functions of the Tionghoa community utterances that tend to use Hokkien language and the non Tionghoa community that typically to use Indonesian language. The theory proposed by Austin and Leech was used to classify and analyze the speech act data delivered and collected through a non-participative observation and taking notes technique. The data were obtained from five traditional markets in Medan from July to September 2020. The data showed five kinds of speech acts from both the Tionghoa and non-Tionghoa communities. A directive speech act was the dominant speech act obtained because the directive speech act influenced the interlocutor. In this case, the customer dominated the seller to do what the customer demanded. The directive speech act also showed the chief ordering function found in the Tionghoa community, and the bargaining function was located in the nonTionghoa community. The ordering directive speech act prevalent in Tionghoa speakers related to the character of the majority of Tionghoa community members in Medan, which was straightforward. In this case, they gave orders or directly asked for what they needed or sought. Meanwhile, in the non-Tionghoa community, the utterances refer to buying and selling laws, dominated by bargaining utterances, both bargaining for goods or prices. In comparison, the declarative speech act is the minor speech act found to express resignation towards the COVID-19 condition.

This study aims to see the politeness of Indonesian in a printed daily newspaper published in Bali, namely the daily Tribun Bali which presents a page of a column called "Smart Traveler" that discusses tourism objects in Bali. In this study, two points were researched, namely the form of politeness and the form of Indonesian politeness based on the principle of politeness (Leech, 1993). Data obtained naturally by reading the daily Tribun Bali, especially the tourism column "Smart Traveler". Then the data is coded according to the function of the Indonesian language, especially in the field of pragmatics concerning the principle of politeness, and transcribed on the data card. The data then were analyzed using two aspects, namely, first, the data were analyzed to determine linguistic elements such as phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics in a predetermined time. Second, the data were analyzed and presented descriptively, then the results obtained were viewed from a theoretical perspective to find out why that was all that happened. In analyzing the data, the distributional method is used, which is working within the scope of the language itself without connecting things outside it.
