Drug utilisation research is essential in clinical practice because it serves as the foundation for implementing changes to drug dispensing rules at the local and national levels. The ultimate goal of such a study is to make drug usage more reasonable. This prospective cross-sectional study aimed to collect data on drug utilisation among dental patients from Himachal Pradesh's Department of Periodontics to identify possible targets for improving drug prescribing habits. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, data were collected prospectively from a total of 849 medical records of patients. The patient's information included their OPD number, age, sex, health problem description, and prescription parameters, including medicine name, route, strength, dose form, quantity, duration, investigations, provisional diagnosis, and therapy. Prescriptions were analysed using WHO core drug indicators and WHO ATC/DDD approach to calculate drug consumption. The most prescribed antibiotic was amoxicillin, separately or in combination. The number of DDD consumed and the DDD/1000 population/day was the maximum for vitamins, followed by antibacterial and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The average number of drugs per encounter was 2.2. The percentage of encounters with an antibiotic in prescription was very high i.e., 72.3%. Only 37.6% of medications were prescribed, from NLEM 2015, and 14.60% generic names were prescribed. The dental practitioners did not adhere to WHO prescribing guidelines. Pain is an undesirable sensation that any person would never want to experience. Dental pain is unbearable as the inflammation of the dental pulp is encased by hard dentin and cementum unlike other parts of the body and that deteriorates the normal lifestyle of the person experiencing it. Patients experience extreme pain till the commencement of any dental treatment. Though the right treatment procedure relieves the cause of the pain, post-operative pain exists till the complete healing occurs. This proves to us the importance of dental analgesics. There are many analgesics available and not everything will be appropriate. Proper selection of analgesics helps in the betterment of the patient’s status. This article reviews the commonly available analgesics and their pharmacological aspects which help in managing dental pain.

Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are unintended or harmful effects due to the use of a medicine. Antibiotics and analgesics, which incidentally, are commonly prescribed by dentists, result in most of the ADRs globally. As with most healthcare professionals, dentists do not report on ADRs regularly. Therefore, the aim of the review was to explore the drugs most used in dental practice in South Africa (SA), their associated ADRs and the ADR reporting channels. The study undertook a literature review that focused on studies of adverse drug reactions specifically in dental practices. An electronic search was done on EBSCO host to source articles published from 2000 to 2022. There was a plethora of ADRs that were found to occur with the medicines that are prescribed by dentists that ranged from minor to serious. Although all medicines have a risk of ADRs, amoxicillin can result in gastrointestinal disturbances and anaphylactic reactions, while clindamycin has a risk of Clostridium difficile infection. Patients need to be alerted to the risk of a disulfiram reaction with metronidazole and alcohol. Hepatic failure can occur with paracetamol use especially in patients with underlying liver disease, an alcoholic or in an overdose. Ibuprofen, caution in patients with underlying ulcers as gastrointestinal bleeding is a risk. Local anesthetics pose a high threat of severe reactions such as tissue necrosis and direct neurotoxicity while anterograde amnesia, respiratory depression and thrombosis can occur with benzodiazepines. Dentists can prevent ADRs by having a good knowledge of their prescribed drugs, monitoring their patients and by being judicious in their prescribing habits.
