Analgesic, Antidiarrheal and Antidepressant Activities of Anethum sowa Linn. in Swiss-Albino Mice Model

Abstract: The hexane (HE), dichloromethane (DCME), ethyl acetate (EAE) and methanol (ME) extracts of seed and stem of Anethum sowa were subjected to screenings for analgesic, anti-diarrheal and anti-depressant activities. The peripheral and central analgesic actions were determined by using formalin-induced writhing test and tail immersion method. The DCME extract of stem, at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight, significantly reduced the number of writhing movements whereas the methanol extract of seed at the same dose exhi… Show more

“…Hypoglycemic activity was evaluated by oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). 20 In this assay, the experimental animals were also divided into negative control, standard and test groups containing three mice in each group. At zero-hour, test samples (HFLS, CFLS, AFLS at 500 mg/kg body weight), control and standard glibenclamide (10 mg/kg body weight) were administered orally.…”

“…Dill-apiol and essential oil derived from seed have insecticidal, ovicidal and synergistic activity against flour beetles (13,14,15). Moreover essential oils have antioxidant and antimicrobial activities (12). Ethanol extract of the stem has antioxidant, antifungal and insecticidal activities (16,17,18).…”

“…The transmission of pain impulses to the brain, where they can be modified by a variety of variables, is mediated by certain nerve fibers. By working on the sensory nerve system, analgesic drugs delay or eliminate analgesia or pain without appreciably affecting awareness [3].…”
