Analgesic, Anti-Inflammatory, and GC-MS Studies onCastanospermum australeA. Cunn. & C. FraserexHook.

Abstract: The present study was aimed to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of Castanospermum australe and to profile phytochemicals by GC-MS. The ethanolic extracts were prepared by successive solvent extraction using Soxhlet apparatus. The analgesic activity was analyzed by hot plate method and acetic acid-induced writhing test whereas anti-inflammatory study was done by carrageenan induced paw oedema model. The acute toxicity study revealed that ethanol extracts of leaf and bark of C. australe we… Show more

“…Although these have potent activity, the long-term administration is required for the treatment of chronic diseases. 4 Furthermore, these drugs have various and severe adverse effects that have compelled the need for identification of alternative substances that can resolve inflammation in a way that is homeostatic, modulatory, efficient, and well tolerated by the body. 5 One such alternative is the use of medicinal plants because their therapeutic value has been well established for various human diseases.…”

“…These authors found high levels of prostaglandins PGE2 and PGF 2α during the first 30 min after acetic acid injection. Therefore the analgesic activities of the plant extracts of the present study might be for the reduction of prostaglandins as well as for the inhibition of pain receptors 10,11 .…”

“…Analgesic activities of the extracts were tested by acetic acid induced writhing model in mice. Acetic acid causes analgesia by liberation of endogenous substances which then excite the nerve endings 10 . Table 1 summarizes the findings of analgesic activity test as the similar and highest writhing inhibition (56.25%) by A. squamosa and P. betel extracts followed by (43.75%) of C. procera extracts at 500 mg/kg body weights.…”

“…The extract was found to be safe and devoid of toxicity, even at a larger dose of 2000 mg/Kg. 21 Citrullus colocynthis (Cucurbitaceae). The aqueous extracts of roots, stem, fruits, and seeds of C. colocynthis were assessed to weigh the analgesic and antiphlogistic properties without inducing critical toxicities.…”
