In the last few decades, Moringa oleifera, a multipurpose medicinal plant (MMP) has received increased research attention and commercial interest for its nutritional, therapeutic and pharmacological properties. Rigorous approaches including biological assays, animal and clinical trials are required towards safe usage as herbal therapy. We conducted a systematic review of the known pharmacological activities, toxicity, and safety of M. oleifera, usually used locally in the treatment and prevention of myriads of illnesses. Five major bibliographic databases (SCOPUS, Web of Science, Science Direct, PubMed, and Mendeley) were searched for studies reported on pharmacological activities, toxicity, and safety assessment of M. oleifera in the last 29 years (1990 – 2019). Studies on animals and humans involving aqueous leaf extracts and different preparations from M. oleifera seed and bark were also considered. All articles retained, and data collected were evaluated based on the period of the article, country where such studies were conducted and the document type. Our search results identified and analyzed 165 articles while 63 studies were eventually retained. Diverse pharmacological activities including neuroprotective, antimicrobial, antiasthmatic, anti-malaria, cardioprotective, antidiabetic, antiobesity, hepatoprotective and cytotoxic effects, amongst others, were recorded. Toxicity studies in animal models and few human studies showed that M. oleifera is safe with no adverse effect reported. The importance of the plant is highlighted in the search for new bioactive compounds to explore its therapeutic potentials towards drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical and allied industries.

Cannonball (Couroupita guianensis) fruits are large sized with disagreeable odor. However, it is widely used traditionally for cold, wound, headache, stomach ache, antibacterial, antifungal and medicinal drink. The present investigation was focused to determine the total phenol and flavonoids as well as the antioxidant properties of fruit pulp of Couroupita guianensis extracted with four different solvents. Additionally, chemical constituents of fruit pulp were also evaluated. Successful extraction was carried out with different solvents such as petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and aqueous alcohol using Soxhlet apparatus. The different extracts were assessed for quantitative total phenol and total flavonoid contents, and their antioxidant activity were determined by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) assay. The extract presenting higher total phenol and flavonoid was subjected to Gas chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to explore the chemical constituents. Ethanol extract presented higher total phenol and total flavonoid and was found to be 206.98±0.40 mg GAE/g and 83.18±0.42 mg QE/g respectively. Similarly, % inhibition of DPPH was higher in the ethanol extract exhibiting IC50 value of 52.59. GC-MS analysis confirmed the presence of about 30 different chemical components. Among the different components, 2,5-Furandione, 3 methyl and hydroxymethylfurfural were found to be the major components in the ethanol extract. The present investigation confirmed that the ethanol extract had showed higher total phenol and flavonoid which can be correlated to its highest % inhibition than other extracts. Hence, considering the obtained result, the ethanol extract can be explored for pharmacological activities.

Objectives: We aimed to evaluate the impact of the tryptanthrin (TRP) compound, with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, on the excisional wound (EW) model. In an EW model in mice, we tried to explain the possible effect of TRP through vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) that contribute significantly to wound healing. Methods: A total of 90 BALB-C female mice aged 6 - 8 weeks were used in the present study. Animals were randomly divided into five groups. After creating the EW model, three different doses (1, 2.5, 5 mg/kg) of TRP compound were applied topically for 14 days, and wound closure rates were measured on days 0, 3, and 7. Vascular endothelial growth factor and MMP-9 were evaluated on days 3, 7, and 14 on wound explants and on day 14 on serum samples by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Histopathological analysis was performed on wound explants. Results: After the EW model creation, significant healing of the wound areas was observed in the groups for which TRP was applied, especially on the third day. Moreover, in groups that received the third dose of TRP, the wound closure rate was 94%. It was found that the wound areas were closed due to the increase in TRP dose. In line with wound healing, VEGF and MMP-9 levels gradually rose on the third and seventh days and decreased on the 14th day. Conclusions: Tryptanthrin compound usage on the EW model increased wound healing and did not leave a scar after 14 days.
