A ayahuasca é um chá com propriedades psicoativas utilizado por povos indígenas da América do Sul, obtido a partir da infusão de duas plantas, a Banisteriopsis caapi e Psychotria viridis. Da junção dessas plantas obtém-se uma preparação rica em alcaloides β-carbonilas que promovem o bloqueio da Monoaminoxidase(MAO) e concentrações consideráveis de N, N-dimetiltriptamina(DMT). A MAO degrada o DMT em situações fisiológicas normais. O chá da ayahuasca vem sendo incorporado a rituais religiosos tradicionais com respaldo legal para fins religiosos. Estudos recentes sugerem que a ayahuasca pode utilizada como complemento terapêutico para pacientes com transtornos psiquiátricos, como depressão, ansiedade e vícios de substancias químicas. Este artigo por objetivo realizar uma revisão bibliográfica quanto o uso ritualístico e farmacológico da ayahuasca, analisando interfaces terapêuticas desta droga. Na busca de dados foram incluídos 11 artigos originais publicados entre 2015 e 2019 que abordam a temática proposta. O uso de substâncias psicoativas, como a ayahuasca, vem crescendo nos últimos anos decorrente da disseminação de seus benefícios na literatura e meios midiáticos. Por meio da revisão da literatura, foi possível evidenciar sua ampla difusão no contexto religioso, uma referida eficácia farmacológica do chá em estudos direcionados para a saúde mental, denotando sua possível aplicação no campo da psiquiatria.
