An MCP-based detector array with integrated electronics

Abstract: Various position sensitive readout systems for microchannel plates are considered. A discrete anode detector with 192 channels and integrated data acquisition electronics developed at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth is presented. Details of the custom silicon circuit which performs data acquisition in the device are given, together with key performance indicators. An example application of the detector enhancing the performance of a GCMS measurement is given. The next generation of detector currently unde… Show more

“…the columns of A are the objects used to fit to the measured spectrum. If a set of t is found with χ 2 ⩽ n then the t with maximum entropy should be selected 5. In the present work the minimum χ 2 was always greater than n and therefore it was not necessary to maximize the entropy.…”

“…This is a broad definition since such a dark count could arise from either the MCP itself or a noisy MCP readout (the array on the silicon chip). However, the detector array on the silicon chip is essentially noiseless 5. Also, the development of MCPs with lower and lower dark counts is an active area of research6 and in principle the level of MCP dark counts can be reduced to a very low level.…”

“…Similarly, it has not been possible to directly determine the linearity of the present device using the laboratory X-ray source, however the previous device [10] exhibited good linearity over at least 6 orders of magnitude.…”

“…Earlier experiments with a similar MCP based device [10] yielded a maximum count rate in excess of 10 4 counts per second per pixel, leading to an overall count rate of approximately 4MHz across the array. The exact figure for the 384-and 768-channel devices will be determined in a series of experiments planned for the synchrotron radiation source.…”

“…At present, several new array detectors for mass spectrometry are in various stages of development. One of these array detectors, termed a focal plane camera (FPC), has been developed by Knight et al This novel device combines an array of Faraday cups, each with its own low-capacitance integrator, with a multiplexed readout. This detector has several advantages over conventional mass spectrometric array detectors.…”
