PurposeSocial initiatives must disclose their results to access support. However, there is no theoretical consensus about how to do it. It is still necessary to understand the value creation in social initiatives because they may or not have economic goals. However, these goals serve to make the social ones feasible. This study aims to cut this Gordian knot by providing measures aligned to the value theory but developed by the social lens. It offers a non-economic-focused approach to dealing with assessment complexity and with multiple stakeholders’ needs for information.Design/methodology/approachA consolidation research path is suggested by three composed measures built upon tested and reliable scales. These value measures are discussed through narratives from Portuguese investors and social entrepreneurs in a mixed-methods design. Content analysis and online survey provided data for descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's alpha test.FindingsThe analyses supported the value measures. Thus, they allow an effective way to assess and report the social value created. It also highlighted a potential use in preventive and corrective approaches helpful for several organizations that pursue social goals.Research limitations/implicationsThe measures were tested based on social entrepreneurs' opinions. Future studies can include beneficiaries' opinions, allowing comparisons that can help to set more realistic goals and better investment criteria.Originality/valueThe relationship between investors and initiatives can improve, boosting their impact on society. The measures can highlight prioritization choices that influence the way value is created. Hence, they serve as a sensemaking from a holistic standpoint.

This study aims to understand the nature of Generation Y (Gen Y) and identify their understandings of talent development practices at the workplace. This research used open-ended interviews directed to 15 participants belonging to Gen Y in an automobile company in Sri Lanka. Job-hopping is an identifiable factor among the generation, as they continuously look for a change in their work and personal routines. The ‘Talk and chalk’ model is getting unpopular, whereas different approaches carrying new concepts have created a good impression among the Gen Y employees. Treasure hunts, talent shows, racing events, kaizen events, grooming and flexibility, were identified as non-traditional attractive talent development programmes. This research provided practical implications for employers to recognize how to Y-size their organizations by incorporating talent development as a critical strategy for retaining Gen Y. The present study has given attention to expanding the geographical scope of the literature on Gen Y.

Malaysia is forecasted to become an ageing nation by 2030. As this may reflect an improvement in the healthcare system, a lot of parties need to adapt to these changes immediately including the government, which is responsible for the wellbeing of the public sector employees by providing a defined-benefit scheme during their retirement. The study aims to perform big data processing and analyze Malaysian mortality trends by expanding the Malaysian Abridged Life Table for the past 20 years using the six-point Lagrangian interpolation method, which is a key machine learning algorithm used today. Apart from that, this study also aims to examine the impact of mortality changes on pension liabilities by using actuarial valuation methods, which is Projected Unit Credit (PUC) method. The sensitivity analysis will be conducted to observe the impact of the changes under five scenarios with four different ages at the time of valuation. Based on the empirical results, it was found that the Six-point Lagrangian interpolation method shows a satisfactory outcome as the error recorded is below 1 percent. The result shows that there is a decreasing pattern in the mortality rate for the past 20 years, which will eventually result in population ageing in Malaysia. Furthermore, the impact of reduced mortality rate on pension liabilities was also found to be significant. However, the impact can be mitigated by increasing the retirement age as life expectancy of the Malaysian population is believed to continue to increase due to ageing population.
