An Interaction Model of Anorexia nervosa

Abstract: Noticeable similarities were found in the psychosocial field by a comparison of a group of anorexia nervosa patients with a representative sample of normal controls. In particular, no confirmation could be found of the mother dominance coupled with the weak and frequently absent father, as postulated under the interactional model of anorexia nervosa. Empirical discriminate analyses of the role of individual family members are necessary.

“…Two common findings are (i) an intense, ambivalent, rivalrous relationship with the nearest in age sibling whether older or younger, whether brother or sister and (ii) an expectation that the patient would relate well with a close in age sister who was of incompatible personality" (p. 266). Engel and Hohne (1989) conducted a standardized interview in 33 severely ill anorexia nervosa patients and in 111 normal female controls: their answers on questions about intrafamilial relations were rated from 0 (no disturbance) to 4 (very severe disturbance). Two items of this interview concerned sibling rivalry and sibling relationship and both were rated rather positively with no divergence between the groups.…”
