An initial topology of multi-terminal HVDC transmission system in Europe: A case study of the North-Sea region

Abstract: In this paper, technical challenges for realizing offshore multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) transmission system in Europe is evaluated. An offshore MTDC topology is projected by interconnecting point-to-point HVDC links with the same voltage level and technology found in southeastern part of North Sea. Availability analysis is done to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed offshore MTDC topology. As compared to point-topoint (PtP) HVDC link, MTDC operation gives a more secure and reliable system. “…(1) The total impedance of the circuit should be large enough to have negligible power consumption during normal operation. (2) The switching devices are used to adapt the connected impedance during normal or post-fault operation. The connected impedance should be designed appropriately to fulfil the trade-off between avoiding excessive current and achieving fast pole rebalancing speed.…”

“…The majority of the VSC HVDC point-to-point links are built with a symmetrical monopolar configuration to reduce the DC stress on the interface transformers. The symmetrical monopolar configuration is likely to be one of options for the future HVDC grids as European TSOs are already planning to connect the existing point-to-point HVDC links to form HVDC grids [2].…”

“…In an area where there are already several VSC-HVDC links in operation, it is more likely to develop the DC grids in steps, i.e. by interconnecting some of these existing links or adding a new converter to the existing link [1], [2]. This is mainly because an organic way of developing the DC grids has a lower investment cost as compared to building the multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) system from scratch [2].…”

This is mainly because an organic way of developing the DC grids has a lower investment cost as compared to building the multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) system from scratch [2]. As an example, in the south-eastern part of the North Sea region, there are 8 VSC links in operation and 3 more are currently being built.…”

“…With the increasing number of installed HVDC links, there is a drive to create a meshed dc grid in order to increase reliability and reduce cost [1]. The high voltage, high power, dc-dc converter plays a vital role in the development of such a grid [2], [3].…”
