Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are currently considered an important driving force of economic growth. Several studies have been developed to analyse this issue and, in particular, to assess the credit risk of SMEs. Most of these applications, however, share the same methodological limitations, such as the manner by which criteria are selected, or the methods used for calculating the weights between them. “…Snapshots of the application of the "post-its technique" Following the methodological guidelines provided by Keeney (1992Keeney ( , 1996, a value tree was constructed based on the collective cognitive map, as shown in Figure 4. Although not always a smooth transition (for discussion, see Ferreira, Santos, Rodrigues, & Spahr, 2014;Ferreira, Jalali, Meidutė-Kavaliauskienė, & Viana, 2015a;Filipe, Ferreira, & Santos, 2015;Gonçalves, Ferreira, Jalali, & Meidutė-Kavaliauskienė, 2016;Jalali et al, 2016), this step of the process proved very valuable and was considered of extreme importance by the participants involved.…”

“…This value tree will be operationalized, in a later stage of the structuring process, through the construction of descriptors (i.e. set of ordered performance levels) (see Filipe et al 2015;Gonçalves et al 2016). Next, the MAC-BETH approach will be applied, allowing the trade-offs between FPVs to be calculated, and local performance scales to be obtained for each descriptor.…”

“…Eden, Ackermann, 2004;Canas et al 2015;Komarov, Avdeeva 2015;Gonçalves et al 2016). As pointed out by Gavrilova et al (2013), "maps as visual tools facilitate the representation and communication, support the identification and the interpretation of information, facilitate consultation and codification, and stimulate mental associations".…”

“…The analysis of business insolvency has become the object of an extensive field of research, due to the direct and indirect costs that this situation can generate for company stakeholders (Warner 1977;Bhabra, Yao 2011;Boguslauskas et al 2011;Gonçalves et al 2016;Premachandra et al 2011). Costs can be even greater if the company is an electricity distributor (ED) that is a natural monopoly, where a cessation of its activities thus generates impacts for society as a whole (Duane 2002;Viscusi et al 2005).…”
