PurposeKey performance indicators (KPIs) of maintenance systems serve as benchmarks to workers and organizations to compare their goals for decision-making purposes. Unfortunately, the effects of one KPI on the other are least known, restraining decisions on prioritization of KPIs. This article examines and prioritizes the KPIs of the maintenance system in a food processing industry using the novel Taguchi (T) scheme-decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method, Taguchi–Pareto (TP) scheme–DEMATEL method and the DEMATEL method.Design/methodology/approachThe causal association of maintenance process parameters (frequency of failure, downtime, MTTR, MTBF, availability and MTTF) was studied. Besides, the optimized maintenance parameters were infused into the DEMATEL method that translates the optimized values into cause and effect responses and keeping in view the result of analysis. Data collection was done from a food processing plant in Nigeria.FindingsThe results indicated that downtime and availability have the most causal effects on other criteria when DEMATEL and T-DEMATEL methods were respectively applied to the problem. Furthermore, the frequency of failure is mostly affected by other criteria in the key performance indication selection using the two methods. The combined Taguchi scheme and DEMATEL method is appropriate to optimize and establish the causal relationships of factors.Originality/valueHardly any studies have reported the joint optimization and causal relationship of maintenance system parameters. However, the current study achieves this goal using the T-DEMATEL, TP-DEMATEL and DEMATEL methods for the first time. The applied methods effectively ease decisions on prioritization of KPIs for enhancement.

Societies experience intense and frequent changes in various environments, which increases uncertainty and complexity in decision-making. The pandemic caused by COVID-19 exacerbates this situation. Companies and individuals had to adapt to new rules and change their work and consumer behavior. Therefore, the decision-maker seeks to reduce risks and meet these new challenges. In this context, science plays a vital role in managing the crisis.The aims of the article are: to promote awareness of the increase in uncertainty and how this can generate negative impacts that affect decision making; to indicate how the fuzzy logic can help in the reduction of risks by facilitating decision making; and to know the forgotten effects of the pandemic on society. This study is applied research, with a quantitative modelling and simulation approach through the Forgotten Effects Theory. The main contribution is to show the usefulness of an algorithm that allows identifying forgotten effects and preventing future crises. The results allow us to predict and act more effectively on the causes, thus minimizing the effects of the crisis in society. There is an enormous potential for future lines of research on the subject.

An Evaluation of Water Absorption Process Parameters for Composites by Deploying A Novel DEMATEL Method-PROMETHEE Method

Parametric ranking and selection in water absorption process of composite development are obligatory as they guide on resource distribution during the planning phase of composite development. However, the present literature model seems inaccurate as the PROMETHEE method fails to offer the likelihood of structuring the water absorption problem making it challenging to achieve a concise problem viewpoint and assess the results without difficulty. In this paper, the DEMATEL method is introduced to assign weights, revealing a cause and effect mechanism to overcome the aforementioned problem. The coupling point of the DEMATEL method-PROMETHEE method is at the weight determination of the DEMATEL method and the net outranking results are the final output of the model. Based on literature data, the DEMATEL method produced weights of 0.182, 0.114, 0.290, 0.242 and 0.244 for the parameters of final weight, initial weight, length, thickness and time, respectively. The PROMETHEE procedure yields the outranking results of -0.2166, -0.2742 and -0.0079 for the length, thickness and time, revealing time as the best parameter. The proposed method is user-friendly, complete in outranking, successful in real-world applications and capable to establish the cause and effect series constituent of the complicated water absorption system. The usefulness of this research is to help composite developers to achieve effective distribution of resource and decision regarding priority of parameters, leading to lean and effective manufacturing outcomes.
