PurposeThis study aims to develop a cause-effect relationship between criteria that contribute to water security using the Intuitionistic Fuzzy-Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (IF-DEMATEL) method. Differently from the typical DEMATEL which utilizes crisp numbers, this modification introduces intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (IFNs) to enhance judgments in a group decision-making environment. In particular, the linguistic variables used in IF-DEMATEL are defined using the concept of three-tuple of IFNs.Design/methodology/approachData with the linguistic variable “influence” were collected from a group of experts in water security via personal unstructured interviews. Seven water security criteria are considered in this study. Computational software was employed to execute the computational procedures of the IF-DEMATEL method. It is anticipated that by taking into account the hesitation degree of IFNs will reflect the scenario in real life, which could lead to precise decision-making.FindingsThe results show that “Over-Abstraction”, “Saltwater Intrusion” and “Limited Infrastructures” are the cause criteria that contribute to water security. In addition, the relationship map of influence shows that “Water Pollution” and “Rapid Urbanization” are the most vulnerable criteria as these two criteria are most easily affected by other criteria in a unidirectional relation.Practical implicationsIt is anticipated that these findings will serve as useful references for water security management and policymakers.Originality/valueThe present study makes a noteworthy contribution to the modification of DEMATEL where three-tuple of intuitionistic fuzzy numbers are considered in the computations. The present study also provides additional evidence with respect to factors that contribute to water security.

PurposeThis paper proposes a progressive, multi-level framework for diagnosing maintenance performance: rapid performance health checks of key performance for different equipment groups and end-to-end process diagnostics to further locate potential performance issues. A question-based performance evaluation approach is introduced to support the selection and derivation of case-specific indicators based on diagnostic aspects.Design/methodology/approachThe case research method is used to develop the proposed framework. The generic parts of the framework are built on existing maintenance performance measurement theories through a literature review. In the case study, empirical maintenance data of 196 emergency shutdown valves (ESDVs) are collected over a two-year period to support the development and validation of the proposed approach.FindingsTo improve processes, companies need a separate performance measurement structure. This paper suggests a hierarchical model in four layers (objective, domain, aspect and performance measurement) to facilitate the selection and derivation of indicators, which could potentially reduce management complexity and help prioritize continuous performance improvement. Examples of new indicators are derived from a case study that includes 196 ESDVs at an offshore oil and gas production plant.Originality/valueMethodological approaches to deriving various performance indicators have rarely been addressed in the maintenance field. The proposed diagnostic framework provides a structured way to identify and locate process performance issues by creating indicators that can bridge generic evaluation aspects and maintenance data. The framework is highly adaptive as data availability functions are used as inputs to generate indicators instead of passively filtering out non-applicable existing indicators.

Nowadays, maintenance performance in organizations has become compelling due to competitiveness in the global market and the inclusion of more legislation issues (such as safety and health regulations) in assessments. In this article, the purpose is to formulate in maintenance problem for a food processing unit as a multicriteria problem and solve it using the evaluation based on distance from the average solution (EDAS) method. To attain this purpose, the authors defined a set of weighted criteria and a set of alternatives, and the solution is the alternative that scores the best in those criteria. Consequently, analysis was done based on the EDAS method and the calculated results from the literature data. Consequently, the parameters considered include the frequency of failure, MTBF, MTTF and MTTR while availability is the response. The EDAS method was used to select the best alternative (MTTR, 0.8802) and this score of 0.8802 is for an alternative. The chief novelty of this article is the unique introduction of an innovative EDAS method, which requires only two measures of the desirability of alternative (positive and negative distances from the average solution) but excluded the evaluation of the idea and nadir solutions for the key performance indicators of maintenance. Consequently, this study initiates a maintenance plan for the food industry referring to the key performance indicators as a cause for poor availability of equipment in the Nigerian food industry.
