“…Elimination of the exocrine pancreas caused total growth retardation which is in agreement with previous studies (Fedkiv, Rengman, Westrom, & Pierzynowski, 2009;Gewert et al, 2004;Goncharova et al, 2014;Rengman et al, 2009). Supplementation of the diet with PLEM for 10 days significantly increased the body mass of EPI pigs (Table 1).…”

“…The EPI pigs exhibit all the classical satiety signs, which suggests that in terms of the secretion and action of the anorexigenic gut hormones, they are normal and thus comparable to control pigs. Rengman et al (2009) did not observe any differences in insulin and growth hormone secretion between control and EPI pigs after intragastric loading with an elementary diet. In the present study, no significant differences in prandial and postprandial CCK levels were observed in the intact, control pigs and that observed in the same pigs after the development of EPI.…”

“…In fact, the effects of EPI due to PDLsurgery on structure and function of gastrointestinal mucosa in pigs to our knowledge have not been reported. Furthermore, we have previously shown that young PDLoperated pigs do not have the ability to retain or assimilate nutrients into body mass, even when administered intravenously as an elemental diet (total parenteral nutrition) until pancreatic enzyme supplementation was orally administered [21]. These results suggest a novel factor(s) related to the exocrine pancreatic function that play a role in nutrient assimilation/retention in the tissues which acts via gut mucosa in a first line.…”

“…The literature concerning effects of PEI on growth of young pigs is controversial. While some authors found massive growth retardation [21,23,28,32,33] others found only partial growth retardation [31,34,35]. It was assumed that the age of pigs at experimental induction of PEI is highly relevant for the effects on growth [28].…”
