An automated method for the analysis of methylparaben, propylparaben, benzophenone‐3, and benzophenone‐4 in water effluents via on‐line solid‐phase extraction coupled with high‐performance liquid chromatography/ultraviolet detection was proposed. The preconcentration parameters were studied using Plackett‐Burman and Box‐Behnken experimental designs using a C18 sorbent material. The results demonstrated that the eluent volume, composition, and sorbent amount were statistically significant. Optimal conditions for these variables were an eluent volume of 1.55 mL, eluent composition of acetonitrile 100% v/v, and sorbent amount of 100 mg. The eluted sample was analyzed on‐line using high‐performance liquid chromatography equipped with a reversed‐phase C18 column and ultraviolet detection. Separation of the analytes was achieved in 15 min using gradient elution with acetonitrile/water. A simple, sensitive, and rapid analytical method was proposed for personal care compounds without sophisticated or expensive equipment. The limits of detection were 1.20, 1.73, 2.51, and 4.67 μg/L for propylparaben, methylparaben, benzophenone‐3, and benzophenone‐4, respectively. The analysis time was 48 min, consuming only 1.59 mL of eluent acetonitrile for the solid phase extraction step, with minimal sample handling. The method was applied to the analysis of spiked swimming pool and wastewater, with recoveries between 65–107%. These results indicate the reliability of the flow‐based procedure.

Plant extracts have been long used by the traditional healers for providing health benefits and are nowadays suitable ingredient for the production of formulated health products and nutraceuticals. Traditional methods of extraction such as maceration, percolation, digestion, and preparation of decoctions and infusions are now been replaced by advanced extraction methods for increased extraction efficiency and selectivity of bioactive compounds to meet up the increasing market demand. Advanced techniques use different ways for extraction such as microwaves, ultrasound waves, supercritical fluids, enzymes, pressurized liquids, electric field, etc. These innovative extraction techniques, afford final extracts selectively rich in compounds of interest without formation of artifacts, and are often simple, fast, environmentally friendly and fully automated compared to existing extraction method. The present review is focused on the recent trends on the extraction of different bioactive chemical constituents depending on the nature of sample matrices and their chemical classes including anthocyanins, flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids, oils, etc. In addition, we review the strategies for designing extraction, selection of most suitable extraction methods, and trends of extraction methods for botanicals. Recent progress on the research based on these advanced methods of extractions and their industrial importance are also discussed in detail.

Beverages with nutritional functional properties constitute one of the fastest‐growing segments in the food industry. Beverages produced with berries as raw materials, owing to their richness in various beneficial substances (such as fiber, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive phytochemicals), have emerged as integral components of nutritional functional beverages. In this review, we summarize the bioactive polyphenols present in berry beverages and discuss the potential properties of berries from an antidiabetic perspective. The application and impact of new technologies in the processing and production of berry beverages are also explored. Additionally, the review addresses the challenges and prospects faced by industrial development in berry beverage production. Our objective is to provide valuable information for food researchers and the berry beverage production industry, facilitating the production of highly nutritious drinks that appeal to consumers.
