Study on citronella essential oil (CEO) sensitivity of 217 microbial strains of 65 species, isolated from animals with different disease conditions, revealed that citronella oil inhibited growth of only 10.6% strains. CEO inhibited Candida but of no Aspergillus strain. CEO inhibited 22 of 211 bacterial strains. Ampicillin was the least effective antibiotic but inhibited 41.2% bacterial strains. Gram positive bacteria (GPBs) were 4.5 more sensitive (p, 0.0006) to CEO than Gram negative bacteria (GNBs). More GNB strains (p, 0.02) were multi-drug resistant (MDR) type than GPB strains. Probability of CEO resistant was high in MDR strains (p, 0.006). Most of the Brucella abortus strains had MDR (83.3%). Strains of swamp buffalo origin were more (p, 0.08) commonly CEO (96.6%) resistant than strains of dog (81.3%) origin. MDR was the maximum in abortion associated (51.2%) strains and minimum in diarrhoea associated strains (25%). The study indicated that CEO is not an effective antimicrobial against veterinary clinical isolates. Antimicrobial drug resistance and CEO resistance patterns of bacteria were dependent on type of pathogen, its source and association with disease in animals and may be important for deciding an effective antimicrobial therapy.

Background The patient has always been at the centre of the evidence‐based medicine model. Case‐based critical reviews, such as best‐evidence topics, however, are incomplete reflections of the evidence‐based medicine philosophy, because they fail to consider the patient's perspective. We propose a new framework, called the ‘Shared Decision Evidence Summary’ (ShaDES), where the patient's perspective on available treatment options is explicitly included. Methods Our framework is grounded in the critical appraisal of a clinical scenario, and the development of a clinical question, including patient characteristics, compared options and outcomes to be improved. Answers to the clinical question are informed by the literature, the evaluation of its quality and its potential usefulness to the clinical scenario. Finally, the evidence synthesis is presented to the patient to facilitate the formulation of an evidence‐informed decision about the treatment options. Key results Using three similar but contrasted clinical scenarios of patients with low back pain, we illustrate how considering the patient's preferences on the proposed treatment options impact the bottom line, a synthetic formulation of the answer to the focused question. ShaDES includes clinical and psychosocial components, transformed in a searchable question, with a full search strategy. Conclusions ShaDES is a practical framework that may facilitate clinical decisions adapted to psychological, social and other relevant non‐clinical characteristics of patients.

Considerable economic loss occurs due to helminth parasites in country fowl throughout the world are. Though less emphasis has been placed on utilising DNA elements to study cestodes of veterinary importance, correct diagnosis is, nevertheless, critical to proper treatment and control. These are able to induce structural, biochemical and immunological changes in the host like inappetence, diarrhoea, dull hair coat and ostertagiosis. At present, control is almost exclusively based on anthelmintics. Hence, Genomic DNA analysis plays a vital role in characterizing and classifying cestode parasites.The present study revealed restriction digestion analysis of genomic DNA of Raillietina echinobothrida reference isolates collected from country chicken "Gallus domesticus" from Zambazaar market, Triplicane, Chennai (Tamil Nadu) using 9 restriction endonucleases enzymes namely HindΙΙΙ, EcoRΙ, BamHΙ, BglΙ, HaeΙΙΙ, XhoΙ, SfiΙ, NheΙ and HinfΙ revealed some differences in the restriction profile of DNA in the chick isolates. Lambda HindIII marker was used to compare the genomic DNA bands of R. echinobothrida formed in the gel. R. echinobothrida digested with the enzymes like EcoRΙ, BamHΙ, BglΙ, HaeΙΙΙ and XhoΙ compared with 23kb of lambda HindIII marker and most of them showed streaky and smeared formation of DNA and SfiΙ, NheΙ and HinfΙ showed no bands.
