An Application of Soft Systems Methodology in the Sugar Industry

Abstract: This research describes and analyses a methodological approach, known as Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). SSM was applied in the sugar industry, which is characterized by diverse stakeholders who have multiple and often competing objectives. SSM is a methodology that was developed in response to the limitations of the systems engineering approach. It uses a flexible, yet organized process to bring about action to improve problematical situations. A qualitative research approach was used. Interviews and SSM work… Show more

“…Nevertheless, there is evidence that a performance gap exists between factories, within multi-site operations, in energy and resource efficiency [4], [5]. The study here also serves as a response to information silos and local or fragmented development of best practice in manufacturing [6], [7].…”

“…It is a framework for seeing interrelationships rather than things, for seeing patterns of change rather than static "snapshots. " Some research that has been done related to this research are: an overview of the soft system methodology (Burge, 2015), the application of SSM in universities (Mehregan, Hosseinzadeh, & Kazemi, 2012), SSM in Math evolution module (Warwick, 2008), the application of SSM in the sugar industry (Proches & Bodhanya, 2015), SSM in strategic planning (Díaz-Parra et al, 2014), SSM as a Learning and Management Tool (Khisty, 1995), and learning to support learning together with SSM (Sanchez & Mejía, 2008).…”

“…The data will then analysed using Soft System Methodology (SSM). SSM is a qualitative research method based on thinking systems that places importance on meaning, self-reflection, interpretation, human experience, learning and participation (Proches and Bodhanya, 2015). SSM was constructed because there are limitations in the system engineering approach, which insufficient in the social complexity of human situations.…”
