An Analysis of RF On-Chip Antennas in Si-Based Integrated Microwave Photonics

Abstract: We investigate the monolithic integration of RF antennas onto a silicon-based integrated microwave photonics (IMWP) chip for short-range millimeter-wave (mmW) communication. The unification of antenna with photonic integrated circuits (PICs) reduces system loss for high data rate communication by eliminating parasitic interconnects. This integration of electronics (antenna) with photonics will be a key milestone leading to increased bandwidth capability and ubiquitous wireless links for emerging applications s… Show more

“…We previously demonstrated a proof of concept with a 15 GHz on-chip antenna design in SiPh [21], and we also conducted simulation of planar antennas for intra-chip communication [22] and inter/intra-chip communication [23]. In contrast to [21], this work not only achieves three times the data transmission capacity (from 650 Mb/s to 4 Gb/s), but also demonstrates intra-chip communication.…”

“…Several studies [5,6] have explored Si-based designs for OCAs (On-Chip Antennas) with a view to improving gain and efficiency and reducing parasitic interconnections. Such antennas generally tend to have a narrow bandwidth (less than 10%) and a limited radiation efficiency and range; however, what distinguishes them is their small size, allowing integration into a variety of electronic devices [7].…”
