An Analysis of Hypoplastic Anæmia With Special Reference to the Use of Oxymetholone (”adroyd“) in Its Therapy

Abstract: SummaryEight of II patients with refractory anæmia, who required regular blood transfusions to maintain their hæmoglobin level, gave a dramatic clinical and hæmatological response to oxymetholone. Analysis of bone marrow aspirates revealed an overall increase in erythropoietic tissue and mitotic indices following successful treatment with oxymetholone. A significant increase in the incidence of karyomeres was noted in the red‐cell precursors in some patients with hypoplastic anæmia. This was interpreted as ref… Show more

“…Sanchez-Medal et al (1969) claimed a remission rate of 70% in patients with aplastic anaemia who lived longer than 2 months and thus received an adequate trial with oxymetholone. Similar results have been reported by Allen et al (1968) and by Silink and Firkin (1968).…”

“…In 1964, Sanchez-Medal et al [11] reported remission in 70% of cases of various types of chronic refractory anaemia after treatment with a new anabolic steroid, oxymetholone. Several more recent reports [2,7,12,15] have, in part, supported these findings. The aim of this study was to determine the type of hypoproliferative anaemia that best responds to a standard, high-dose oxymetholone re-1 Studies on aregenerative anaemia, III. …”

“…Sanchez-Medal et al [11,12] reported a remission rate of 70°/o after 2 months treatment. Allen et al [2] reported 100°/o improvement in 5 children who had failed to respond to testosterone.…”

“…The failure of conventional therapy with high dosage corticosteroids and repeated whole blood, packed cell, and platelet transfusions prompted attempts at marrow stimulation with phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) (Baker & Oliver, 1965;Catovsky & Sforza, 1967;Grunewald et al, 1965;Hayes & Spurr, 1966;Retief, Wasserman & Hofmeyer, 1964) and oxymetholone (Sanchez-Medal, G6mez-Leal & Duarte-Zapata, 1966;Sanchez-Medal et al, 1964;Silink & Firkin, 1968;Allen et al, 1968). These were tried in turn, corticosteroids being continued throughout to reduce the bleeding tendency.…”
