An Analysis of Energy Use and Estimation of a Mechanization Index of Garlic Production in Iran

Abstract: This paper studies the energy balance between the input and the output per unit area for garlic in Hamedan province of Iran. In this study, data were collected by using random sampling method for 136 face to face questioners. Results showed that the highest share of energy consumption belongs to chemical fertilizers (41.7%) followed by diesel (13.94%). The results indicated that a total energy input of 40307.89MJ ha -1 was consumed for garlic production. The energy productivity and net energy value were estima… Show more

“…It shows that contribution machinery energy has allocated to itself in faba bean production in used active energy (Samavatean et al, 2011). For the growth and development, energy demand in agriculture can be divided into direct and indirect or renewable and nonrenewable energies (Alam et al, 2005).…”

“…The higher value of this index towards one show that most operations are done by machinery indicating that the higher level of mechanization has been utilized. This determination shows what level of mechanization is effective in energy consumption or how unreasonable it is to use machinery (Samavatean et al, 2011).…”

“…Considerable research has been conducted on the energy use pattern of field crops under different management practices throughout the world. Most of the work is related to the energy use pattern for different crops such as sugarcane [4], wheat [5][6][7], cotton [8], garlic [9], tomatoes [10,11], and cucumber [12]. Very little effort has been made to explore the relationship among water, energy and the yield in Pakistan.…”

“…These regions chose to receive new tractors in order to increase their mechanization index. Samavatean et al (2011) analyzed the energetic efficiency and the economic performance of garlic production in Hamedan, province of Iran, and concluded that the energetic efficiency and the economic development of garlic production improved when the mechanization index increased. Olaoye and Rotimi (2010) determined the effect of mechanization on agricultural yield in some farms that were established in two states in the southwest of Nigeria.…”
