An Analysis of Educational Games Design Frameworks From Software Engineering Perspective

Abstract: Game-based learning has dominantly embedded itself into a tool of education in the 21st century. In developing educational games, many researchers have proposed frameworks to defi ne elements of an educational game. This paper presents a survey of the different frameworks for educational games and analyzes these frameworks against several criteria for effective video games, well-designed games and key elements of educational games. The authors will also look at the frameworks support towards learning theories.… Show more

“…Although several frameworks can provide techniques to structure the design concepts of learning games and justify their design decisions, there is still a lack of research on improving the process of designing a learning game [6,14,16]. Most design frameworks/models are not used in the learning game industry because they lack tool-support and guidance for practical applications [8,10,12,13]. Furthermore, learning games require to be developed in interdisciplinary teams involving experts in different areas (technology, game design, pedagogy, and usability).…”

“…Several GBL frameworks structure the design concepts of learning games and can be used to justify and reason the design decisions. However, most of the GBL frameworks are not used in learning game design practice because it is hard to apply these theoretical principles [4,[8][9][10][11], and they lack tool-support and guidance for the practical application [8,10,12,13]. This points to the lack of an operationalizable approach that is more accessible and lightweight to integrate theoretical GBL design knowledge into actual ideation and hands-on practice of learning game design to improve the collaborative process of designing a learning game and guide the GBL design team [4,6,11,12,[14][15][16].…”

“…Eles comparam elementos comuns, tais como, evolução do jogo, gamificação, evidência pedagógicas, controle, engajamento, feedback contínuo, contexto narrativo, teorias de aprendizagem, conflito e interação. Ahmad et al (2015) descreve que o EGM framework tem componentes consistentes da categoria de projeto de desenvolvimento de um jogo educacional. Malliarakis (2014), após análise, desenvolveu um novo framework, nomeado CMX design framework, para criação de jogos para o curso de programação.…”

“…However, the framework selection is not explicitly stated. Likewise, Ahmad et al [19] presented a survey of different educational design frameworks; against criteria such as welldesigned games, effective video games, four learning theories and key elements of a games and analyzed them from software engineering perspective for the development of effective educational games. However, the keywords are not specifically focused on educational games.…”
