An Alberta Cree Indian with a Rare Duffy Antibody, Anti‐Fy 3

Abstract: Anti-Fy3, found in the serum of an Fy(a-b-) Cree Indian woman believed to have been transfused 5 years previously, caused moderate hemolytic disease of the newborn in her eighth live-born baby. Only three examples of anti-Fy3 are know. It is striking that two were made by non-negro people, amongst whom Fy(a-b-) is extremely rare, and only one by a Negro, in whose people Fy(a-b-) is by far the commonest phenotype. This suggests that Fy(a-b-) may be a heterogeneous phenotype, with the negro version conferring so… Show more

“…It was concluded that this frequency varied depending on the anti‐Fy b reagent used, but weak expression of Fy b could be demonstrated in all of these cases. The existence among Caucasians of an allele, Fy x , correlating with weak Fy b expression on RBC was proposed more than three decades ago ( Chown et al , 1965 ) and later investigated at the serological level by others ( Cedergren & Giles, 1973; Buchanan et al , 1976 ; Habibi et al , 1980 ). From these and other studies it has been shown that the antigens Fy3 and Fy5 were also depressed ( Daniels, 1995).…”

“…The serological characteristics of the Fy(aÀ bÀ) phenotype of a Cree Indian woman (patient 1), who lives in a remote area of Northern Alberta, were reported previously (Buchanan et al, 1976). This patient's serum was found to contain a strongly reactive anti-Fy3 during her eighth pregnancy.…”

“…Investigation of her serum during prenatal testing of her third pregnancy led to the discovery of the antibody, and she was phenotyped as Fy(a-b-). 15 Subsequent reports have described the same antibody in a Cree Indian woman and in other Caucasian patients, [16][17][18] all of them with a history of transfusion or pregnancy. Interestingly, African American individuals whose RBCs phenotype as Fy(a-b-) usually develop anti-Fy3 after making anti-Fy a or other alloantibodies.…”
