Ammonium Phosphate as Inhibitor to Mitigate the Corrosion of Steel Rebar in Chloride Contaminated Concrete Pore Solution

Abstract: In the present study, different amounts, i.e., 1–3 v/v% of 1 M ammonium phosphate monobasic, were used as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor to mitigate the corrosion of steel rebar exposed to simulated concrete pore (SCP) + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at a prolonged duration. Potentiodynamic polarization results show that as the amount of inhibitor is increased, the corrosion resistance of steel rebar is increased. The steel rebar exposed to 3% inhibitor-containing SCP + 3.5 wt% NaCl solution exhibited nobler corr… Show more

“…In the use of nitrite-type inhibitors, the ratio [NO 2 − ]/[Cl − ] needs to be near unity, so that the corrosion inhibition efficiency is maximized [26]. Hybrid inhibitors consisting of inorganic quaternary ammonium salts or phosphates and organic compounds such as imidazole have also been shown to impart high inhibition efficiency [27,28]. Additionally, tertiary amines for the repair of structures have been used as organic corrosion inhibitors [29].…”

“…The electrochemical studies were carried out in simulated concrete pore (SP) solutions. The chemical composition for the synthesis of this solution was described in our earlier published work [ 28 , 29 , 30 ] and others [ 31 , 32 ] where NaOH, KOH, and CaO were used. In this solution, SP was filtered with Whatman paper where insoluble CaO was removed.…”

“…Further, the mitigation and adsorption action of ECC on the steel rebar surface in chloridecontaminated SCPS were evaluated through different adsorption isotherms such as Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms. The adsorption isotherms were predicted by the results obtained from the weight loss measurement, and the adsorption isotherms were calculated using the following equation 35,36 Langmuir Isotherm:…”
