Cadmium chloride (CdCl 2) as an environmental and industrial toxin has a significant detrimental effect on the testis (Nna et al., 2017). CdCl 2 is in the heavy metal group that is primarily released from colour pigments, TV screens, plating, battery manufacturing, plastics and fertilisers, and mining activities (Saini & Dhania, 2020). This combination enters the human body through contaminated food, drinking water and inhalation of air containing CdCl 2 particles or smoke containing CdCl 2 due to occupational exposure or air pollution caused by jungle fire (Rehman et al., 2018). Also, nutrition is the main source of absorption of CdCl 2. Vegetables and grains that grow in CdCl 2-contaminated soils or soils that are naturally high in CdCl 2 to be the main source of nonworking conditions exposure (Chunhabundit, 2016). Tobacco plants selectively absorb CdCl 2 from the soil and tobacco consumption increases the level of CdCl 2 in the human body. CdCl 2 can enter the lungs through tobacco smoke (Ganguly et al., 2018) and then circulate CdCl 2 throughout the body. In the liver, CdCl 2 with proteins forms a complex that is eventually secreted by the kidneys (Shirriff & Heikkila, 2017). CdCl 2 concentration in the blood of smokers is 4-5 times and in kidney 2-3 times higher than nonsmokers (Mannino et al., 2004; Mazur et al., 2018). The half-life of cadmium in the blood is estimated at 75-128 days, which means that CdCl 2 is deposited in organs including the liver, kidney and reproductive system and is not excreted from the body (Thompson & Bannigan, 2008). CdCl 2 causes hepatotoxicity (Almeer et al., 2018), nephrotoxicity (Sadek et al., 2017) hematotoxicity (Pagano et al., 2017), cardiotoxicity (Shrivastava et al., 2019) and skeletal muscle injury (Al-Sawafi et al., 2017). Testicular toxicity has been associated with long-term paracetamol usage. Moringa oleifera is known to eliminate toxins from organs and restore functionality. This study seeks to ascertain the potency of moringa in ameliorating paracetamol-induced testicular toxicity. Forty nine (49) Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into seven (7) groups composed of 7 rats each treated for 5 weeks. One group served as the control, while 3 other groups were administered graded doses of paracetamol, then the other 3 groups were administered graded doses of paracetamol and 1600mg/kg of moringa extracts simultaneously. The animals were sacrificed 24 hours after the administration of last dose using anaesthesia. The testes and epididymis were harvested, while blood was obtained via ocular puncture. The moringa extract mitigated the paracetamol-induced dose-dependent decrease in sperm count and sperm morphology. Paracetamol toxicity on hormonal milieu was suppressed by the moringa extract treatment, yielding hormonal values closer to those obtained in the control group. The moringa extract treatment controlled the oxidative stress biomarkers as their values were not as variant when compared to the groups treated with paracetamol only. Hypospermatogenesis along with restoration of normal seminiferous tubules and interstitial spaces observed in the paracetamolinduced groups treated with moringa extracts indicates the ameliorative histological effect of moringa on paracetamol-induced testicular toxicity. Therefore, the use of moringa extract therapy reverses the damaging effects of paracetamol on the testis and male fertility. According to a recent report by the WHO, 50–80 million people suffer with infertility. Amongst these populations, male counterparts account for 20–50% of infertility cases. The aetiology of infertility in men includes many factors such as psychological issues, lifestyle and environmental factors, hormonal disorders and chromosomal abnormalities. The pathophysiology of these aetiologies may be initiated by a local inflammatory reaction increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which can negatively affect the male reproductive system by altering the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadotropin axis (HPG axis). Alteration of the HPG axis may affect testicular steroidogenesis, spermatogenesis, the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells, leading to poor semen quality. The prevalence of male infertility underscores the need for a thorough scientific investigation to identify treatable or reversible factors using plant adjuvants with antioxidative properties. Therefore, this review aims to provide an overview of the currently available knowledge on the aetiologies of male reproductive dysfunction, emphasising infertility risk factors, as well as elucidating the possible ways by which readily available alternatives, such as Moringa oleifera leaves, may mitigate male infertility by highlighting its role on the oxidative stress parameters, reproductive hormonal levels, testicular steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis, gene expression, weight and morphology of the testis and sperm parameters.
