Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the tongue

Abstract: In this report a 13-year-old girl with characteristic clinical and pathological features of alveolar soft part sarcoma of the tongue is presented. Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of unknown origin. Forty eight cases of alveolar soft part sarcoma have so far been reported in the head and neck region. Median survival reported for all sites of the body is 79 months following various modes of therapy. In this case, the treatment was surgical excision of the mass combined with radiotherapy and … Show more

“…In contrast to the fact that 70% of patients with non‐lingual (conventional) ASPS are older than 20 years, 2 the median age for lingual ASPS in the current study was only 5 years, with only three tumours occurring in patients older than 7 years. This finding is in general agreement with previously published cases of lingual ASPS, in which the median age was 8 years 1,3 , 6–10,12–23,25–30 . This median age of single case reports in the literature is derived by excluding cases that we believe do not meet the criteria for primary lingual ASPS 11,24 , 31 .…”

“…Lingual ASPS are reported as 21 bona fide primary lingual cases, in which the patients are ≤21 years of age 1,3,6–10,12–19,21–23,25,27,29,30 . Although we observed a slight male predominance in our series (eight males, six females), the reported literature cases show a striking female predominance for lingual ASPS, 1,6–23,25–30 in keeping with the known predilection of women for ASPS from all anatomical locations 2 . Our finding may differ due to the small number of cases and a referral bias.…”

“…But some clinicians have further tried adjuvant irradiation and/or chemotherapy to improve survival [6,[15][16][17]. Considering, both the difficulty in obtaining tumor-free margins because of the complex anatomy of the paranasal sinuses region and the poorly circumscribed nature of the tumor, we directed our treatment policy to combination therapy, so the patient has received postoperative 5000 Gy of irradiation to the surgical field.…”
