Alpinia zerumbet Potentially Elevates High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Level in Hamsters

Abstract: In folkloric plant medicines, Alpinia zerumbet (AZ) has been popularly recognized as an exellent hepatoprotector. To search for a good high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) elevating herbal preparation, we examined AZ for its antioxidant and hypolipidaemic bioactivities, especially its HDL-C elevating activity. AZ seeds contain 0.51% essential oils (SO), which are comprised of monoterpenoids, oxygenated monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, oxygenated sesquiterpenoids, aldehydes, acid, and esters. Gas chrom… Show more

“…While cholesterol in the body can be eliminated through its conversion by liver into bile acids which is bound to glycine and taurine to form bile salts and secreted to duodenum which is then degraded by microbes in the gut and excreted together with feces, so that body cholesterol content decrease. One of active compounds contained in P. indica leaf is essential oil which has an eff ect to increase bile acids secretion (Lin et al, 2008) and may caused the reduction of cholesterol in broiler meat. Results reported by Konjufca et al (1997) that garlic addition reduced cholesterol content of meat broiler.…”

“…The seeds and husks were separated, dried in an oven held at 43 ± 2°C to constant weight, and then pulverized to obtain fine powders with mesh size 60 of ASP and ASH, respectively. The proximate analysis for each part was carried out according to method of AOAC (1995) previously described (Lin et al, 2008).…”

“…The sample essential oils of AZ (ASO) used was the same as previously isolated and identified in our laboratory and the constituents of which had been previously reported by Lin et al (2008). The products (ASO) were stored at −20°C for use.…”
