Aloe vera and Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is defined as prolonged hyperglycemia, which can harm the eyes, kidneys, and cardiovascular and neurological systems. Herbal agents and their derived supplements have been used for treatment of diabetes mellitus as a part of integrated complementary medicine for centuries. Numerous studies have considered Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f, Xanthorrhoeaceae, as an alternative medicine due to its abundant bioactive chemicals, such as alkaloids, anthraquinones, and enthrones, with therapeutical properties i… Show more

“…Moreover, the application of Aloe gel and/or olive oil reduced the expression of nuclear factor kappa‐light‐chain‐enhancer of activated B cells (NF‐κB) and increased the cell proliferation and angiogenesis markers in the healing wound. Agreeing, that the beneficial effects of A. vera in streptozotocin‐induced diabetic rats were recently reviewed by Haghani et al [39] …”

Agreeing, that the beneficial effects of A. vera in streptozotocininduced diabetic rats were recently reviewed by Haghani et al [39] To date, most studies about its wound-healing effects are based on the A. vera gel and latex. Innovatively, Razia and collaborators [40] showed for the first time the synergistic effect of the A. vera flower and Aloe gel on cutaneous wound healing, revealing its molecular mechanism targeting microfibril-associated glycoprotein 4 (MFAP4) and its associated signaling pathway.…”
