Allergic phenotypes in adult patients with atopic dermatitis, determined with the ISAC test (ImmunoCAP ISAC)

Abstract: IntroductionAtopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis, often with a concomitant allergy. The ImmunoCAP ISAC (Immuno Solid-Phase Allergen Chip) test is a novel method to determine the allergenic phenotype in a given patient.AimIn this study, we used the ImmunoCAP ISAC test to analyze allergic phenotypes in adult patients with AD.Material and methodsThe study included 19 adult patients with AD. The severity of AD was assessed using SCORAD index. Serum concentrations of total IgE were determined… Show more

“…Patients affected by severe AD also differed from patients with moderate AD for several characteristics. In partial contrast with previous studies which were mainly performed on AD cohorts belonging to Northern Europe and therefore exposed to different environmental stimuli, we found a higher prevalence of IgE reactivity to several pollen sources (cypress, grasses, olive tree, pellitory) and to house dust mite, associated with a reduced overall prevalence of Fagales‐related molecules. Mittermann et al, on the contrary, found that PR‐10 molecules were associated with AD more commonly than grass pollen allergens rPhl p 1, rPhl p 5, rPhl p 2 and rPhl p 6.…”

“…39 Interestingly, all homologous components, with the exclusion of profilin and polcalcin, were significantly associated with the occurrence of AD, in accordance with previous studies. 32,38 We found, as already reported, 40 a very high frequency of hyper-reactivity to at least one nsLTPs in the allergic control population (33%). However, in the patients affected by severe AD, such frequency was almost double (ie 60%), thus representing the top-ranking panallergen reactivity observed, followed by SSP (46.8%), lipocalin (43.7%) and PR-10 (42.4%).…”

“…Only few reports demonstrate the sensitization to molecular components in atopic dermatitis patients and the relation of this sensitization to the severity of atopic dermatitis, and to the occurrence of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis (8,17,18). It should be emphasized that in this study we focused on the degree of sensitization only and not on its clinical relevance.…”

“…Grass pollen allergy was investigated due to the high prevalence in Europe. 10,11 The term "grass" as a plant requires its translation into the native language in order to investigate the grass pollen allergy pattern using GT. 12 There are also difficulties in the choice of the correct translation for "hay fever" and "rhinitis" in the Cyrillic-based languages.…”
