Alkaline phosphatase in mitochondria

Abstract: In electron microscope cytochemical studies alkaline phosphatase activity was present in the mitochondria of all liver cells and associated with the plasma membrane of the cells of bile canaliculi. The mitochondrial activity was partially inhibited by L-phenylalanine and Levamisole but the plasma membrane associated activity was completely inhibited by Levamisole. Biochemical assays have shown that a significant amount of the total mouse liver alkaline phosphatase activity was present in the mitochondria fract… Show more

“…Therefore, mitochondria contain the enzymes needed to catalyze these physiological processes, as well as enzymes that catalyze protein synthesis. It is reported that the activity of ALP in mitochondria is relatively high . ALP can catalyze the removal of 5′-phosphate groups from DNA, RNA, ribonucleoside triphosphate, and deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate and plays important roles in the synthesis of DNA and RNA in mitochondria .…”

“…WILSON and FRANKs [20] reported that ALPase was present in the cell membrane and in mitochondria which showed that they have the same isoenzyme pattern. But GRANDSTROM et al [21] ALPase reaction existed in the Golgi apparatus.…”

“…Expression of this enzyme is increased when the bile ducts become blocked. SGOT and SGPT are both enzymes that are mainly found in mitochondria of the liver (28). If liver damage is present, the enzymes are released into the bloodstream following liver cell death (29).…”
