This article presents theoretical discussions and clinical practice based on the experience of online clinical sessions for children centered on the Cultural-Historical Psychology approach. The experience was set with patients from ages as of 4 to 11 years old, from the Hospital São Paulo and it took place at the Children’s Mental Health Sector of the Department of Pediatrics (UNIFESP), at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the sanitary urgency of isolation, which made necessary the restriction of the outpatient care, the sector chose to attend to those patients via video calls. New mediation resources using technological and digital instruments had to be developed in order to continue Play Therapy on online sessions. As a result, Vygotsky’s theory and his collaborators helped to expand the usual techniques and the approach of children online therapy, necessary to continue their mental health care in the pandemic context.

A psicoterapia destaca-se como modalidade de atendimento à criança. Ressalta-se a importância de discutir sobre a psicoterapia infantil, pelo aumento da procura por esse serviço. Com o objetivo de reconhecer como a psicoterapia infantil tem sido conceituada e exercida, foi realizada uma revisão sistemática nas bases de dados BVS, Science Direct e SAGE Pubs, no período entre 2008 e 2018. Dos estudos encontrados, 67 artigos atenderam aos critérios de inclusão. Constatou-se que a psicoterapia infantil vem se configurando como uma prática fundamental frente às demandas existentes, bem como um campo de produção científica e de práxis voltada às demandas em cada cultura. Verificou-se que as vivências infantis têm sido olhadas com mais cuidado e com uma compreensão mais abrangente nesse campo de atuação. Conclui-se que há abrangente discussão sobre os avanços da psicoterapia infantil, assim como a permanente necessidade de investigação e de aprimoramento.

Mentalization has been considered a common factor across therapeutic processes, inherent to all effective treatment models. However, empirical findings and evidence about the presence and relevance of the construct for use in child psychodynamic psychotherapy processes are scarce. To contribute to filling this gap, the aim of this study was to analyse three children's psychotherapies in regards to the similarity of the treatments to the mentalization process prototype. This study is exploratory, longitudinal and descriptive, and is based on the systematic case studies procedure. Three school‐age children and their therapists participated. Two hundred and seventy‐three sessions were coded with the Child Psychotherapy Process Q‐Set and analysed according to their similarity to the mentalization process prototype. The results showed that it was possible to identify the presence of elements based on the mentalization approach in child psychodynamic psychotherapy. In addition, the presence of the therapist's mentalizing attitudes was associated with increased feelings of security and a greater connection of emotions to experiences. The results corroborated the propositions that enhancing mentalization is an implicit process in child psychodynamic psychotherapy, and suggested the importance of acknowledging and understanding the essential elements that compose the treatment models.
