Alfred Schutz and ethnomethodology: Origins and departures

Abstract: The work of Alfred Schutz was an important early influence on Harold Garfinkel and therefore on the development of ethnomethodology. In this article, I try to clarify what Garfinkel drew from Schutz, as well as what he did not take from him, specifically as regards the task of social inquiry. This is done by focusing in detail on one of Schutz’s key articles: ‘Concept and Theory Formation in the Social Sciences’. The aim is thereby to illuminate the relationship between Schutz’s views on the character of socia… Show more

“…The phenomenological study was conducted to understand the specific socio-cultural condition of Bawean Island collected through the relevant field data. By formulating phenomenology with the perspective of Alfred Schutz, this study sought to understand the behavior and actions performed by the girls and parents in the early marriage cases based on the in-order-to motive and the because-of motive (Hammersley, 2019). Schutz's theory states that phenomenology is interested in identifying problems from the meaningful sense experience, which occurs in individual consciousness separately and then collectively in the interaction between consciousnesses.…”

“…Schutz's theory states that phenomenology is interested in identifying problems from the meaningful sense experience, which occurs in individual consciousness separately and then collectively in the interaction between consciousnesses. It is a part where consciousness acts on raw sensory data to create meaning, in the same way that it sees something ambiguous from that distance (Hammersley, 2019). Schutz's phenomenology concept is based on the meaning of action developed by Max Weber (Tada, 2019).…”

“…Instead, students of ethnomethodology are recommended to "misread" philosophical classics, i.e., to engage in practical phenomena in order to discover for themselves what philosophers and sociologists may be talking about as "real-worldly" events (Lynch, 1993: 117;. By contrast, the relationship between Garfinkel and Schütz has been the subject of quite extensive research (Heritage, 1984;Eberle, 1984Eberle, , 2008Eberle, , 2012Bergmann, 1988;Lynch, 1993Lynch, , 2004Dennis, 2004;Sharrock, 2004;Psathas, 1989Psathas, , 1999Psathas, , 2004Psathas, , 2009Psathas, , 2012Hammersley, 2019;Meyer, forthcoming).…”

“…See also Wagner (1983b). Also relevant here is the question of the relationship between Schutz’s work and ethnomethodology: see Hammersley (2019) and Psathas (1999). Of particular relevance on this score is Ruggerone’s (1996, 2013) argument that Garfinkel’s approach is closer to that of Husserl than Schutz.…”
