Alcoholic Liver Disease in Asia, Europe, and North America

Abstract: Alcoholic liver diseases (ALD) comprise a spectrum of clinical disorders and changes in liver tissue that can be detected by pathology analysis. These range from steatosis to more severe signs and symptoms of liver disease associated with inflammation, such as those observed in patients with alcoholic hepatitis or cirrhosis. Although the relationship between alcohol consumption and liver disease is well established, severe alcohol-related morbidities develop in only a minority of people who consume alcohol in … Show more

“…Excessive alcohol consumption is a leading cause of chronic liver diseases worldwide 1 and causes a broad spectrum of liver disorders ranging from simple steatosis to severe forms of liver injury including steatohepatitis, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma 2, 3 . Over the last five decades, investigators have been actively exploring animal models for alcoholic liver disease (ALD), studying its pathogenesis and searching for therapeutic drugs for the treatment of ALD.…”

“…In the liver, excessive alcohol use can lead to a broad spectrum of liver disorders, ranging from simple steatosis to severe forms of liver injury including steatohepatitis, fibrosis/cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma 2 . The underlying mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver injury are complex, involving the derangement in hepatic lipid metabolism, innate immune responses, as well as epigenetic regulation 3335 – all these processes are also under control by lncRNAs 17, 24, 26 .…”

“…8 Simple fatty liver, which is defined as the accumulation of fat (triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesterol esters) in hepatocytes, is usually a self-limited condition that can resolve in those who remain abstinent for ∼4-6 weeks. 9 However, alcoholic steatosis, which was once considered benign, is now recognized as a condition that may lead to advanced liver disease or cirrhosis.…”
