Air pollution interacts with past episodes of bronchiolitis in the development of asthma

Abstract: In children, the interaction between air pollution and past episodes of bronchiolitis resulted in a greater prevalence of asthma and pointed to an association with bronchial hyper-reactivity and decreased lung function. These results suggest mechanisms underlying the development of asthma.

“…Air pollution also causes asthma and increases airway hyperresponsiveness 49. Interestingly, it may act synergistically with host susceptibility (as indicated by past episodes of bronchiolitis) to promote the development of asthma 50. Allergic rhinitis is also closely associated with air pollution.…”

“…Fourthly, exposure to outdoor pollutants is itself closely associated with the intermediate phenotype of asthma. In children, air pollution interacts with past episodes of bronchiolitis in the development of asthma 54. Moreover, exposure to traffic exhaust particles increases oxidative stress and has epigenetic effects during pregnancy 55.…”
