Air Pollution and Tourism: Evidence from G20 Countries

Abstract: Theoretically, it is well argued that environmental factors affect the growth of the tourism industry; however, from an empirical perspective, some gaps still exist in the literature. We empirically examine the effect of carbon dioxide (CO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions on tourist arrivals in a panel of G20 countries. Using annual data from 1995 to 2014 and a series of panel data models, our results suggest that the growth of both CO2 and PM2.5 emissions adversely affects international tourist arri… Show more

“…Considering the spillover effect, fewer people choose to come to China in the Asian region, while more and more foreigners travel to Southeast Asia. This result is consistent with most existing research (Dong et al 2019 ; Xu et al 2020 ; Churchill et al 2022 ), which can highlight the importance of considering the spillover effects when evaluating the relationship between air quality and international tourism arrivals.…”

“…Zhou et al ( 2019 ) demonstrated that air pollution has a negative influence on tourism flows and that this effect is more pronounced for inbound tourism than for domestic tourism. Churchill et al ( 2022 ) found that the growth of both CO 2 and PM 2.5 emissions adversely affects international tourist arrivals. All these conclusions show the negative impact of air quality deterioration on tourism.…”

“…If PM10 concentration increases by one-unit, the domestic and inbound tourism arrivals decline by 0.19% and 0.33%, respectively. Churchill, Pan, and Paramati (2020) Pre-trip effect Increased CO 2 and PM2.5 have adverse effects on tourist arrival in both developed and developing Economies. Specifically, a 1% increase in CO 2 and PM2.5 emissions are associated with a 0.69% and 0.5% decrease in tourist arrivals, respectively.…”

“…The last studied phenomenon that serves tourist arrivals is the idea of zero-emissions of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Contemporary tourists already choose green destinations over the smoggy ones [106,107]. Therefore, the idea is to study the opposite data, where tourist arrivals are a dependent variable instead of previous research where tourist arrivals were treated as an independent variable [108].…”
