Thermal comfort may be evaluated from the thermal condition of residential houses and their occupants' satisfaction. This research evaluates the thermal comfort of traditional residential houses located in mountainous areas of Wonosobo, Indonesia. The evaluation is conducted based on the physical condition of residential houses and their occupants' satisfaction factors. A quantitative approach is employed to analyze the theory of static thermal comfort (Predicted Mean Vote/PMV) and that of adaptive thermal comfort (Actual Mean Vote/AMV). The research method is conducted based on a field study. The thermal condition is measured using 4 climate variables and 2 personal variables. Climate variables are air temperature, globe temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity. Personal variables are clothes and activity. AMV was based on thermal sensation from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and AirConditioning Engineers). The sensation thermal is very cold (-3), cold (-2), cool (-1), neutral (0), warm (+1), hot (+2), very hot (+3). The research has conducted a survey of 14 houses with 39 respondents. The research findings show that the comfort temperature is 24.47 o C within air temperature (T a) or 24.14 o C within T g or 24.17 o C within T o or 25.08 o C within T ET or 24.69 o C within T SET. These findings are compared to those previously conducted in Jakarta and Bandung showing that some differences are dealing with their comfort temperature. The other findings show that there are also some PMV and AMV differences of traditional residential houses located in the tropical mountainous areas.

Indonesia has no reliable thermal comfort standard that is based on research works. The current national standard (SNI 6390:2011) states only a single range of comfort temperature that is 25.5 °C Ta, with a range of +1.5 °C Ta. Previous thermal studies in a number of different buildings in Indonesia showed that the neutral (comfort) temperatures of subjects were about 27 to 28 °C, which is higher than the values stated in the standard. As a big country with various ambient temperatures, Indonesian needs a better and more reliable thermal comfort predictor which can be applied properly across the country. This study is an attempt to propose an initial Indonesian thermal predictor, in the form of a simple equation, which could predict comfort temperatures properly across the country. Reanalysing the previous comfort studies in Indonesia, a simple regression equation is constructed as to be used as the initial Indonesian comfort predictor. Using this predictor, the comfort temperatures in a lowland or coastal cities like Jakarta is found to be higher than the current comfort standard. It is expected that this predictor would help to provide a better indoor thermal environment and at the same reduce the cooling energy in air conditioning (AC) building, thus reducing a building's carbon emissions.

According to the sustainable architecture theories, the building with a high level of thermal performance is the building that has the high percentage of thermal comfort accomplishment and low level of energy consumption. Thermal comfort is a building's criteria in order to make the building's users activity become optimal. It can be achieved by natural ventilation/NV system and air conditioning/AC system that may either preserve or consume a great deal of fossil energy. Hence, climatic parameters and architecture design aspects could always determine its accomplishment. Ward is the primary section of hospital installation which functions as patient's house while they undergo their healing process, whereas hospital is a primary public facility in any contemporary urban setting. From the energy using side, hospital is the public building type that has high level of fossil energy consumption. Therefore, the development of high level's thermal performance ward will contribute to environment sustainability by reducing its fossil energy combustion. For that matter, it is then important to know which ward's design aspects that may become the dominant factors for the thermal comfort establishment and efficient energy use. The goal of this research is mainly to disclose the relationship between thermal performance and architecture design aspects in lowland warm humid tropics ward. The research methods are quantitative method (by using statistical test, linear regression analyses and correlative analysis based on the building's physics theory) and field case study. The results of this research are the architecture design aspects of lowland warm humid tropics ward that have been dominant factors on its thermal performance level; that are the building's orientation toward the sun and the building's layout plan within the site.
