AHP‐Aided Evaluation of Logistic and Transport Solutions in a Seaport

Abstract: The chapter reports on the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to a strategic decision in the transport sector, concerning the reconfiguration of the railway infrastructure of the seaport of Trieste. The proposed solutions should not only solve some technical and operational problems of the terminal, but they could allow the port to be included in the Trans-European Network-Transport Programme (TEN-T), promoted by the European Union and aimed to develop the Trans-European Networks of Transport.… Show more

“…This problem is usually overcome by dividing the criteria into sub-criteria, which further complicates the model. Therefore, this document, in order to classify different reuse alternatives [69][70][71], combines different multi-criteria methods in the different stages of the decision-making process in order to develop a "quick" tool to improve the quality and reliability of the decision-making process itself, especially in the planning decision phase. The Figure 1 presents the methodological framework of the decision support process used in the work.…”

“…Each of these methods has a wide application in the various areas of science and technology, as well as in solving real-life problems. The AHP method was used in [21] to make a strategic decision in a transport system; i.e., for the purpose of the reconfiguration of the railway infrastructure in the port of Trieste. In [22], this method was used to determine the significance of the criteria in evaluating different transitivity alternatives in transport in Catania.…”
