Agronomic divergence of sorghum hybrids for silage yield in the semiarid region of Paraiba

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic divergence of 25 sorghum hybrids (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) in the semiarid region of Paraiba. A randomized block design with three replications was used for evaluation of plant height (PH), total natural matter production (TNMP) and total dry matter production (TDMP) and the percentage of components of DM (panicle, leaf blade, stem and dead matter) of the following hybrids: 866005, 866019, 866033, 866034, 866035, 866036, 866037, 866040, 866041, 866… Show more

“…The low DM content of the hybrid BRS 610 can be explained by the higher percentage of total DM in the stem, as observed by Silva et al (2011). The higher values of DM in the silages may be associated with a high percentage of panicle, as observed by Silva et al (2011). Neumann et al (2002a) N-NH 3 -ammonia nitrogen; LA -lactic acid; AA -acetic acid; PA -propionic acid; BA -butyric acid; TN -total nitrogen; DM -dry matter; CV -coefficient of variation.…”

“…Hybrids 870025, 870035, 870081, 870095, 866034, and 870031 had higher (P<0.05) values of DM and the hybrid BRS 610 had the lowest (P<0.05) average in relation to the others. The low DM content of the hybrid BRS 610 can be explained by the higher percentage of total DM in the stem, as observed by Silva et al (2011). “…Forage sorghum has more sugar content than other purpose sorghum owing to higher stem than other parts of plant (SILVA et al, 2011a). In spite of being more productive, when ensiled losses may occur, since yeast can develop into the silo.…”

“…Por sua vez, as pastagens representam a fonte de alimento muito importante na criação de ruminantes. Na região Nordeste do Brasil cerca de 70% de sua área estão incluídos no semiárido, caracterizado por condições climáticas que causam variação sazonal na produção de forragem (Silva et al, 2011). Desta forma, a suplementação volumosa tem-se baseado na utilização de recursos forrageiros adaptados à seca.…”
