Evolution of agrarian systems in countries with fragmented agricultural area structure leads to a decrease in the number of farms and an increase in the area and effectiveness of entities developing their activity. It is necessary to find out the causes of disagrarization - a process that is manifested at the macroeconomic level in reduced significance of agriculture in the national economy, among other things, and reduced importance of agricultural incomes in the economy of the countryside and a part of farms at the microeconomic level - in order to effectively impact ongoing changes that often affect the whole regions. The paper is an attempt to identify the factors determining the intensity of the process of the production and economic disagrarization of farms in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. Calculation procedures performed using the zero unitarization method and Data Mining tools enabled assessment of the intensity of the phenomenon analysed in the different territorial units (gminas), and identification of factors that have the biggest impact on its intensity. Using the process of modelling by the C&amp;RT method it has been found out that the characteristics that describe the agrarian structure historically, i.e. intensity of the organisation of agriculture, fragmentation of the agrarian structure, had a big impact on differentiation of gminas in terms of the intensity of disagrarization. High intensity of the organisation of agriculture combined with good environmental conditions is conducive to the retention of production functions of agriculture in a given area. With low intensity of the organisation of agriculture and very large fragmentation of the agrarian structure, the intensity of disagrarization was very often determined by characteristics typical of periurban areas or tourist attractions, i.e. increase in population density and increase in the number of residential buildings. Urban development of a given territorial unit stimulated processes of exiting agriculture.

The aim of this analyses was to assess the changes in the organisation and scale of plant production of commercial farms located within varying distances from the core of metropolitan areas. The analysis covered a total of 1,854 commercial farms from Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie, Mazowieckie, Lubelskie, Dolnośląskie and Małopolskie voivodeships that participated in the FADN system over an uninterrupted period between 2004 and 2016. In the study population, entities engaged in production in various functional zones of metropolitan areas (MA) were identified. The study found that in the commercial farms operating in the inner zone of MAs, field cropping and horticulture are gaining importance while livestock production is subject to marginalisation.

Bölgelerden bahsedilirken sanki bir bütün parçalara ayrılıyormuş zannedilir. Aslında tam tersi bir durum söz konusudur. Yani parçalar benzerliklerine göre bir araya getirilerek bir bütünlük oluşturulmaktadır. İşte Tarım bölgeleri ayrımında kullanılan kriterler bu bütütünlüğü yakalamak için gelişirilen yöntemlerdir. Bu bütünde başlıca rol oynayan unsurların nasıl gruplandırılmış olduğu ortaya konulması gerekir. İlk çalışmalarda tarımsal faaliyetlerin nitelikleri belirtilirken sonraki çalışmalarda tarım ürünlerinin farklılıklarına yönelik sınıflandırma yapılmıştır. Tarım bölgeleri ayrımı ile ilgili çalışmalar üç grupta incelenebilir; Birinci grup çalışmalar Dünya tarım bölgelerini tespitine yönelik yapılmıştır. Bu alanda ilk çalışmalar Alman Coğrafyacılar Ratzel (1891) ve Hahn (1892) tarafından dünya tarım alanlarını sınıflandırmaya yönelik yapılmıştır. Daha sonra Dünya Tarım Bölgeleri çalışmaları içerinde en çok kabul gören sınıflandırma Whittlesey (1936) tarafından yapılmıştır. Hartshorne ve Dicken da Kuzey Amerika ve Avrupa'nın tarım bölgelerini istatiksel yollarla belirlemişlerdir. Cole'un eski Sovyetler Birliğinde tarım bölgelerini tespite yönelik çalışmasında Whittlesey'in etkisi görülmesine rağmen günümüzdeki değeri ise kıta büyüklüğündeki bu alanda tarımsal ürünler ile sanayi ve gıda ihtiyacı arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymasındadır. Kıta büyüklüğündeki bir başka ülke olan Çin'de de tarımsal bölgeleri tespite yönelen çalışmalar başlamıştır. Gao Huancheng ve Yao J.G. "Çin'de Tarımsal Tiplerin Araştırılmasına Bir Başlangıç" olarak adlandırdıkları çalışmada, ülkede 12 tarımsal tip, dolayısıyla bölge, tespit etmişlerdir. Tarım bölgeleri ile ilgili üçüncü grubu ise ülke ölçeğinde yapılan çalışmalar oluşturmaktadır. Erinç ve Tunçdilek (1952) tarafından Türkiye'nin Tarımsal bölge ayrımı çalışmaları yapmışdır. Sonuç olarak tarım bölgeleri belirlenirken geçmişten günümüze birçok farklı yöntem kullanılarak dünya, kıta ve ülke ölçeğinde farklı çalışmalar yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmaların asıl amacı insanoğlunun beslenmesinde temel etken olan tarımsal ürünlerini en iyi adapte olduğu alanlarda yetiştirmek için yapılacak planlamalar ile birim alandan en fazla verimi almaya yönelik çalışmalara ışık tutabilmektir.
