AGHR polymorphism and its associations with carcass traits in Harrwoo cattle

Abstract

TIle growth hormone receptor (GHR) is a membrane transmitter for the growth hormone signal transduction pathway that regulates various metabolic activities. including cell growth and expressions of cytokine genes. The presence or absence of a genetic polymorphism for the UNE'l retroposon in the PI promoter, which specifically regulates th e GlDl gene expression in the liver, was screened by a novel detection method and examined for its relationships with carcass traits in Hanwoo cattle. Han woo cattle had taurine type U NE-l present (allele n as well as incidine type U NE-l absent <allele A) promoter sequences. Three genotypes, IJI, VA and AlA, showed Irequencies of 49.1, 36.7 and 14.20 /0, respectively. The effects of allele A were significant on mean dif· Ierences for final weight, eye musc le area, marbling score an d fat color (p < 0.05), bu t not for carcass weight, backfat thickness, final meat quali ty gra de or meat color (p > 0.05). Most 3<rmonth old Hanwoo steers bearing the UNE·l abse nt pro moter had whiter fat color, heavi er live weigh t and higher marbling score, reflecting intramu scular fat deposition in M longissimus dorsi, com · pared to animals bearing a UNE-I present promoter. Thi s suggests that a GHR polymorp his m could be a potenti al genetic marker for improving beef production of Hanwoo cattle.
