“…In addition, the increase in the number of components of metabolic syndrome in patients with central obesity was associated with an increase in carotid IMT. These findings are consistent with the report revealing that the aggregation of features of metabolic syndrome is associated with increased CVD in type 2 diabetes [16,31], and suggested that central obesity is associated with the development of atherosclerosis via several atherosclerotic risk factors.…”

“…This is consistent with reports revealing that the combination of high waist circumference value and high triglyceride level is a better predictor of CVD than either alone [30]. Our study revealed that 93.3% (men 94.5%, women 89.7%) of patients with central obesity had hypertension and/or dyslipidemia shown in Table 2, and this ratio was similar with that in a previous study for 1,424 Japanese type 2 diabetic patients and higher than that for general populations [1][2][3]31]. These findings represent specific features in metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetic patients; that is, most of type 2 diabetic patients with central obesity have hypertension and/or dyslipidemia and is logically diagnosed metabolic syndrome.…”

“…Multiple studies have implicated the metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a potential cause of peripheral neuropathy 11, 12, 13, 14. However, studies that have investigated the contributions of the individual components have revealed mixed results 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21.…”

“…A nefropatia diabética acomete mais de um terço dos pacientes e é a causa mais comum de doença renal terminal e ingresso em programas de hemodiálise (1), e a retinopatia diabética é a principal causa de cegueira entre os 20-74 anos. As doenças cardiovasculares (DCV) são responsáveis por mais de 50% das mortes em pacientes com DM tipo 2 (DM2) e também por 30% das internações em centros de tratamento intensivo (2).…”
